I think what you are trying to do needs to be larger than what you stated you want. The square vrs round thing is a communication issues with your artist, you just need to be firm and tell them what you want. If you want this tattoo to be good, however, you really need to be thinking larger scale, IMHO.

My guy uses a rotary for shading. I think that contributes to me liking it more. When I heard the ZZZZZZZZZZZ of the liner and then I feel it literally digging through my skin, the layers parting as the needle rips down the flesh of my arm I cringe. I like shading a lot more. I can almost fall asleep on the shading…. almost.

Usually when I hear “Phoenix” I gear up for a major eye roll. Not in this case- This looks really well done, it fits your back fantastically and if you add some gold for depth I think it wil be out of this world. Take care of it- red tends to fade faster than other colors.
