Seems to me the tree has two faces, a male and a female. Then the serpent is climbing the tree and it’s head is peering out of the crown (right under the flash spot).

At first glance, I’d guess it’s an Adam & Eve scene.

I don’t really like it, to be honest. It feels ‘flat’ somehow.

I’m not entirely sure how this all works, but I believe that this starts at -100 and then the penalty is lessened with each subsequent post.

As you say, it’s pretty straight forward. You can’t tattoo light over dark, but you can tattoo dark over light. The results may not behave 100% predictably, though, so I’d recommend at least getting a tattooist that is used to covering up ink.
