I think we forget with portrait tattoos that we’re not limited to photo realism. I sort of had the same error in thinking for a long time. You have many, many options within portrait.

How about a smaller tattoo of the 29 cent Murrows stamp?

You know, if a tattoo hater read this thread, they’d say, “SEE? I KNEW THESE PEOPLE WERE A BUNCH OF FREAKS!”
Anyway, no reply from the artist yet. I imagine Monday and Tuesday might be his days off, or maybe emailing him wasn’t the best approach… I told him how much I liked the first one he did and how well it was doing, and how I’d like him…[Read more]

Agreed with the first reply. You’ve made a solid choice. You just want the rest of us to be jealous before you even get it. :p

It was my favorite book as a kid, and my favorite movie as a teen, and both as an adult: LotR. I relate so well to being a little person someone considers harmless, and to some degree, useless. Both served as an inspiration and stepping stone in my life that strength of arms isn’t the only thing that shapes the fate of many.

Makes me think of that Dorothy Parker quote when she was playing some game, and some snob says, “Use ‘horticulture’ in a sentence, Dorothy.” And she goes, “You can lead a horticulture, but you can’t make her think.” 😀
Yes, the purple might work with a lotus or so thrown in. I have a weird thing about my body requiring a cohesive color palette.

It’s a little cacophonous for my tastes. When I get a tattoo, I always ask myself, “How will I like this in a decade? Or four of them? Will this age well with minor touch-ups?”
I’m not sure this tattoo has you “thinking forward” much at all. I’m of the opinion tribal tattoos are for tribal people, or people who are special to that tribe.…[Read more]

I think the bird is Luscinia brunnea, like this. Indian BB’s have little black masks. (Now I see the guy’s little white belly and I’m wondering if he really has a black mask or if that’s shadow.)
Clematis I’m not sure of the origin, though the internet tells me at this moment it is sometimes known as the “star of India.” (Not even going to…[Read more]

I love both suggestions, but my lady cat is FIERCE! 😀 But Ryan may make something sweet I adore that captures her cuddly side. I used to be proud of the scar, but I’m tired of people assuming it’s a C-section scar and nosy questions and making me feel awkward. I don’t like the pity. I pulled through, thanks to my kitty who stuck by my side…[Read more]

How long is your incision scar? I don’t see why you couldn’t incorporate all the elements that you want in your tattoo. I think the example you posted is nice – your artist could just substitute some of the flowers for the bird and cat, and the flowers of your choice. Have him draw something up for you and see what you…

I’m glad you broke your silence. A late welcome to you.
I’m a nurse, not a tattoo artist, but I have three and I do have wound care experience. 🙂 Generally, the healing of a tattoo takes three weeks. You don’t want to submerge it, even in sterile water, before then. After that, sunscreen when you’re outside that’s waterproof, and in my…[Read more]

It’s something I may offer again with a different artist… You never know when someone may jump on sterile supplies, but I’d always do cash. I know if I was tattooing people, I’d be tempted to treat it as a sterile…[Read more]

Cash tipper as well, and I was always taught good service warrants 20+%.
Now, since I do medical stuff, I asked my last tattooist if he would like any wound care supplies: chucks, skin prep, tape for sensitive skin, sterile gloves for especially yucky folks (I almost always have a wound care bag in the car), and he declined.

I definitely plan on making my left side my “literary” side and adding to it, though I doubt that means more text, but more symbols. A sword might easily go above the Tengwar, but I’ll discuss it with the guy who did the rose (Ryan at Alley Cat Studios). He did a beautiful placement and really made the rose “match” the script, even though more…[Read more]

Darling, you are most welcome. I just added to my text tattoo today, and an artist whose won a few awards told me the piece looked solid together. It’s upside down, but:

I’m tickled pink with the result. See? You are not doomed to a blank page!
