I’d like to see examples of their work before I say anything about what a fair price is. I would price the tattoo by the hour on a piece like that. that is the most fair way to price it.

CNBC is reporting that non-traditional jobs are the most secure. Art was one of the main fields they focused on. Throw that in your family’s face. I’m new to the whole tattoo game but I’m making ends meet. I figure it can only get better.

Much better. I do still think you need to slow down and perfect the basics first. I think you need to work on your shapes and shadows. Draw me an apple. A real apple with real shadow and shading. Use real objects, not photos. Set up the lighting however you see fit. Pay attention to the different gradients in the shadows and make sure you use a…[Read more]

I can’t help you too much with that. I’m from near Niagara Falls, New York. I can tell you that good artists are worth traveling to. Check out Bez at Triple Six. I know he’s in the UK. He’s definitely worth the trip.

This artist’s linework is halfway decent. The shading is hideous. Nothing is smooth or precise. I’d say to stay clear of this person and continue looking.

You’ve got a good start. I was where you are not so long ago. I agree that classic art classes are super important. You’ve got to be able to draw up whatever anyone wants no matter what it is. Most times it isn’t even that cool of an idea. Practice drawing script. It seems like every other customer these days wants stuff written on them no matter…[Read more]

I think right now I’m at a little over ten months. The only reason I am where I am in terms of development is because I work really hard and draw constantly. It doesn’t hurt that I’m in my early thirties. I’ve had some extra time to develop as an artist. Thanks to everyone for the honest criticism.
I don’t just want to tattoo. I don’t want to be…[Read more]

As a customer, I disagree. Unless the tattooist fucks up so horribly I’m angry, tipping is mandatory, and should, at a minimum, be 15%. People who work in service do not have the same luxury I do of getting paid a secure hourly rate, and a job well done means a tip is a must, or, like Ms. Mercury said, I don’t need to…[Read more] -

Our shop rate is $100 an hour. I’m a little slow so I charge between $50 and $80 an hour depending on size, location, and complexity. Most tattoos that I do end up costing between $100 and $150. The way I see it, a tip isn’t mandatory, it’s ancillary. Honestly, any tip is greatly appreciated. although if I got a $200 tip I think I would faint.

I’m happy with any tip. When I get more than $20 I’m pumped. I have to hand over half of the money from every tattoo to the shop owner. I get to keep all my tips though. It can make or break a day for me.

God damn I am liking Jeff Gouge!Everybody is liking Jeff Gogue. That’s why he isn’t taking new clients. He’s booked out for two and a half years. As soon as I start making more money I’ll be getting in touch with him. I just hope he likes my idea enough to want to tattoo me. I just think his style is perfect for what I want.

As a fledgling tattoo artist, I can say that tips are definitely awesome with every sitting. Usually half the price of the tattoo goes to the shop owner. Then you have supplies to think about. Plus the hours spent drawing and re-drawing designs. Tips are very appreciated and good tippers are well taken care of.
