I would think that it could be done, but you might have to change the font of ALL the letters to do so…
Make a more stylized/calligraphy type of font…

From what I remember about some documentary (maybe the same one strick9 mentione) they are a bit more painful.

BUT…
The shading they can achieve is impossible with a conventional tattoo machine.
