Your worried about this and yet you are stretching out your earlobes like some African tribesman?

8mm is hardly stretched. Anyway, I frequently walk 4 days to provide water for my family 😀

So a visible tattoo is in some sectors an employment ‘no no’ but yet if I had a full thickness burn on one of my arms as a result of an accident…

What about if your had a tattoo over a burn that made the sight of the original burn less stomach churning than the Freddy Kruger effect that was there before.

Some good and valid points here. Which kinda brings me to my dilemma.

I have a half sleeve that I’m kinda toying with either going 3/4, full or ending at half (easily covered by my uniform).

I work for the ambulance service in the UK and whilst it was on the requirements for my pre-employment that the service didn’t condone tattoos visible that could be deemed by the public as offensive, there are many of my colleagues who have full sleeves and still wear the uniform. My sleeve is currently jap koi with cherry blossom and chrysanths and water… hardly offensive. They haven’t said outright though that your contract will be terminated if you do have one done.

My uniform consists of a elbow-length polo shirt or for those with sleeve tattoos, they recommend long-sleeve shirts. The problem with this is that our role, as with nursing staff in hospitals is supposed to be ‘bare below elbows’ – that said, we still wear watches and people have full sleeves.

I don’t want to jeapordise my future progression in this industry as its something I’ve just started, by making a bad call judgment on going full-sleeve ink.

I’d be interested to hear from anyone else in this predicament.

I’m currently on an 8mm. I started with a stud I had in for years and then bought a titanium circular barbell which was slightly larger than the wire on the stud. From there I added another for a few days, then another, then another etc till I had 4 through the same hole. From there I managed to get the smallest flesh tunnel through and just went up every week or so another mm till eventually I got to where I wanted.

I suppose you could always buy one of those ‘horn’ taper type posts and keep advancing it through periodically. I recall when I was stretching mine, I looked into it on the net at right and wrong ways to do it and going too wide too soon can prolapse the hole in that the inside of the hole kinda explodes out and gets infected.

Slow and steady mate.

Ok, so a few responses in, I’ve just found the ‘Newbie hello’ section.

I found this site whilst looking for some on-going inspiration for a ‘work-in-progress’ sleeve I’m having done at present. I’ll post that issue in a separate thread.

I hail from sunny (or not so most of the time) UK. Right now its f-f-f-f-f-f-f-bloody freezing over here and this morning we had our first covering of snow. Ok so it’s more a light dusting but non-there-less I’ve had to break out the winter woolies.

I’ll hopefully reply where I can constructively do so but please bare in mind, my opinions are exactly that and shouldn’t be taken as more. I am loud, outspoken and sometimes daft (crazy to you the US members :D) but I always try to be fair and hate confrontation.

An ex-graphic designer turned frontline A&E Ambulance Technician in the UK, my career has taken a distinct turn this past 18 months and McLovin’ it.

I’m a father of 2 boys and well into my motorbikes – currently riding a ’96 import Suzuki Bandit 1200 but hoping to chop it in next year for a GSX-R 600 K8.

Anyway, enough babbling and hopefully see some of you inside the site.

PMSL – totally OTT but amusing.

She only said yes cuz he’s minted… he’d have to be to afford the bill for that.

What’s wrong with a good old fashioned ‘down on one knee in a romantic setting’? lol

He shoulda had that tattooed.

TBH mate I’m not sure. I’m a Scorpio and really wanted to incorporate that into my design but not sure if it works in Jap style as its a completely different thing astrology and traditional designs.

I would possibly recommend either speaking to someone on here who really knows their background into Jap styles and what goes/doesn’t go together and see what they say.

There was a different thread on here I was reading yesterday that I also commented on and one of the senior members seemed to really know his shit about the elements you can and can’t put together – that’s if you WANT it to be flow in an authentic style. For me I think I might end up having a completely separate tattoo with my star sign on somewhere else.

You could have a really small Sagittarius logo done within the design, say like on one of the koi’s scales, so it was still in the design but not so prominent that it looked out of place?

Birth weight in Roman Numerals?

Taking into account you’ve had Jap work done, wouldn’t Kanji numbers be more in keeping with the design?

Just a thought.

I think this is deviating away from the original thread a little.

At the end of the day, if everyone had the same tattoo, it would be a little boring. What one person likes inked, another won’t necessarily. For me personally, tribal on me had it’s day a few years ago, a bit like the Celtic bands everyone trended for back in the early 90’s – but that’s just my opinion which is why some people still have them done and others want them covering up – hence the original point in this discussion.

It would be good if we could change tattoos like we change clothes but sadly until that day arrives, I guess we have to plan out what we want carefully before committing to it.

My advice on designing your own, and this is from someone who used to be a designer by trade (ok not tattoo more advertising and graphics), DON’T design your own. I have one I designed myelf and I’m forever looking at it and thinking “that coulda been improved… I’m not happy with that… etc

When I had my sleeve started, I scoured the net for ideas, styles, designs, things I do/don’t like and then took them all together, pics etc. to my artist and said go for it. Choose half a dozen ideas for elements to be incorporated into your sleeve and leave them to it. One thing I found was that when a design is laid down on paper on the flat, it will look quite different anyway to what the finished result will look like due to light, colours etc.

Find an artist who has previous examples of Jap sleeve work as well so you have an idea of their style. They do vary.

Stop fucking with this tattoo it is awful. Start saving for the laser and the coverup.

I have to agree with buttwheat here. The more you mess with this the worse it will end up looking and you still won’t be happy. The best I would imagine you can do, and this is what my tattooist recommended for me, is find a laser removal professional (not sure if your doctor can point you in the direction of a reputable one), tell them what you intend to do ie have it knocked back as opposed to removed. Apparently black is an easier colour to remove with laser than reds due to the pigment absorbing the heat better. It will only need knocking back to a lighter grey for a decent cover up.

My advice, and this is just my personal opinion (what do I know?) get a Jap sleeve(half or full) done. The intricate colours and design will hide the previous remnants of your tribal. Plus, it will be timeless. I can’t help thinking tribal will go the way of a lot of ‘trends’.

Just some food for thought bro.
