Hey MsTibbs, you mentioned swallows there too, and I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that they were originally a way to signify that you’ve been in prison, though I’m sure that it’s not the most popular reason for getting them these days… :). Maybe somebody else here can say if that’s right though?

Hey Matthew, thanks for your response, even though it wasn’t what I wanted to hear… ๐Ÿ˜›

I noticed with this most recent piercing as well as the one before it that when I tried to change the jewellery to something that wasn’t stainless steel, it all turned bad. I’ve googled it and apparently Titanium is completely fine, and I heard that it’s not possible to be allergic to it? But maybe it was coated in something that caused the problem. Anyway, the piercing flared up and started giving me heaps of trouble after being pretty much completely healed, so I quickly changed back to stainless steel and it then was fine within a week and I haven’t had problems since. Strange.

Anyway, I guess I’ll give the nose piercing a miss to be safe, maybe I’ll just draw one on with pen or something… thanks for your help! ๐Ÿ™‚

No worries! ๐Ÿ™‚ It seriously took me weeks before I found out what people were calling it so I’m glad I could help out. Yeah, Belly Button is probably at the top of my list, he is pretty amazing. I went on holiday a couple of months ago and was actually in the same place as a tattoo convention that he was at, I am sooooo kicking myself that I didn’t book in with him while I was there.

It does seem to be really, really slow in catching on, but I’m guessing it’s going to be crazy popular soon enough. I don’t know of any specific magazines, sorry :-(, there really is a huge lack of information around. From searching around I can see where there’s been a couple of online articles written, but they are always out of the ordinary, there doesn’t seem to be anything specialising in it. I actually bought the domain name artbruttattoos dot com a few months back with the plan of making a place just where all of this kind of info could be stored but I haven’t done anything with it yet.

Another idea, maybe you could sent a bulk e-mail to a bunch of these artists and ask if they know of anyone in the US who could help?

And yodaddynukka, volka’s work looks awesome!!

Oh and I forgot to mention that even if you don’t have any luck finding this kind of artist in the US, a lot of the more popular international artists often travel to conventions overseas and do work while they’re there. So that might be an option for you?

Hey piercedCHIC. I put a post on the forum a while back asking about the same style. Didn’t find much info at the time but since then I’ve done a whole heap of searching on it and found a bunch of artists who specialise in it. It seems to be categorised as ‘art brut’ tattooing, which is French for ‘raw art’. Unfortunately I don’t know of any artists based in the US; like you said, most of them are in other places, and France especially have some really exciting artists (Noon and Belly Button (bellybuttontattooshop dot com) are both awesome, Lionel Fahy is really popular too). Here in Australia we have Ran MacLurkin, so that’s who I’ll be going with to get my work done.

So yeah, the terms that seem to have been adopted for it are art brut, raw art or abstract noir. Sorry I can’t help with a US artist but it might help with googling. Good luck, and make sure you post pics of whatever you get done ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah I personally prefer the ones that look a bit cleaner/prettier, not the really messy-looking/angry ones (don’t know how else to describe it!), the ones of people/kids normally look pretty good. Got so much to work with now, just got to decide on what to get!

Have you got a pic of your tattoo? I find the black line/doodleish look really appealing, I’m always really struck by it if I see it on anyone but it really doesn’t seem to be that common.

I noticed the French/French-Canadian trend too, hopefully it’s something that picks up in other parts of the world (Australia is about as far away as I could possibly get!).

Thanks for all your help ๐Ÿ™‚

Poesy, thank you so much! That is the kind of thing I’m looking for. When I was searching for Lionel I came across another artist named Yann Travaille, who is also similar, for anyone who is interested. It just seems crazy that this style doesn’t have a name; I was reading some interviews with the artists and even they didn’t seem to know what to call it.

Thanks for the help so far, if anyone else has any recommendations please let me know but I’ve got a lot more to look at now ๐Ÿ™‚

I think you’re right Gsouder, this style seems to be so out of the ordinary and unique that I might have a hard time finding anyone else who does it. Thanks anyway!

Cornishtiger – yeah, I may do that, the second link is from a local artist who can definitely do the style, but she didn’t design it herself. But she knows Noon’s stuff so that could be the way to go.

Actually, just thinking about it, when she told me about Noon she also mentioned another artist named “Ran”, but googling it gave me nothing. Has anyone ever heard of this artist?
