Hello all
I have been seeing a new style of tattoo art emerging. Most of it has been by artists in the UK, Germany, or Canada.

It’s kinda like abstract graphic design art work. I studied graphic design in college, which is probably why I’m more drawn to this style vs. the traditional, realistic, illustrative stuff that everyone’s been doing.

I’d like to find an artist that’s not afraid of doing something new. But I don’t just need a great artist, they need to be comfortable designing as well. I’d like a full sleeve in this style, so I’d be glad to travel to work with an artist on this piece (in America, hopefully). I’m in the Atlanta area, let me know if you know of an tattoo artist that kicks ass with this kind of work…

If anyone knows how I can post pics let me know.
For now I put examples of what I’m talking about in an album:

To me them tatts dont look too abstract just a little on the graffiti side, so anyone that has a graffiti background should be able to help you on the design front.

If the pics are already one the Internet just C&P the URL into the pop up window when you hit the IMG button in your post box.

I just posted this in an other thread that should help with posting pics

the easy way to post pics on a forum like this is to use a free hosting site(photobucket, tinypic, flicker and the likes), when you upload them to the hosting site copy and past the URL on here after clicking the IMG button(little yellow and grey post card).

C&P the URl how to:
Internet explorer : right click(RC) the image, left click on properties, left click & hold before first character of the address(URL) and drag to then end of it, when it is high lighted RC and copy, then paste it to the box when you click the button.

FireFox: RC image, and copy URL, (I think, iv not used mozilla for a while) and the URL comes up in a window, just highlight and copy it. then paste here after hitting the button

Google Chrome/ Opera: just RC the image and hit copy URL. (I use for google so im going to say its the easy way about it ) then paste here after hitting the button

Are you talking about the work Jondix and Thomas Hooper are doing? If so, it is badass and if you ask the tattooers and tattoo collectors at http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/ you will find someone who can execute your idea or send oyu in the right direction!!! Word on the streets Jondix is coming back to the states shortly. Thomas Hooper is in New York but travels often. If you can get one of these two to do it you will not be disappointed! Chad Koeplinger is doing some of this stuff good also some of the guys in the Midwest. Or on the West Coast in Oakland at Temple Tattoo. Hope this helps and if this is not the style you are referring to let me know!?!

Looks like the same old shit. It’s not really what I was looking for.
A couple of the artists I was referring to are Yann Black from Canada and Math from Limited Edition Tattoo in the UK.
Some of their photos are in my album and …gooOOOooogle…

Yea, I don’t even know how to categorize their art. I’m trying to find American artists thinking outside the box and trying something new like this. I tried looking for graffiti tatts but it didn’t get me the results I wanted either… for lack of a better explanation, it looks more like graphic tshirt art, but not…

Hey piercedCHIC. I put a post on the forum a while back asking about the same style. Didn’t find much info at the time but since then I’ve done a whole heap of searching on it and found a bunch of artists who specialise in it. It seems to be categorised as ‘art brut’ tattooing, which is French for ‘raw art’. Unfortunately I don’t know of any artists based in the US; like you said, most of them are in other places, and France especially have some really exciting artists (Noon and Belly Button (bellybuttontattooshop dot com) are both awesome, Lionel Fahy is really popular too). Here in Australia we have Ran MacLurkin, so that’s who I’ll be going with to get my work done.

So yeah, the terms that seem to have been adopted for it are art brut, raw art or abstract noir. Sorry I can’t help with a US artist but it might help with googling. Good luck, and make sure you post pics of whatever you get done 🙂

Oh and I forgot to mention that even if you don’t have any luck finding this kind of artist in the US, a lot of the more popular international artists often travel to conventions overseas and do work while they’re there. So that might be an option for you?

piercedCHIC and starvega thanks for clarifying. If you want US I would suggest Freddy Corbin for something similar or Tim Hendricks, Luke Wessman or ???? Where in the US are you at?

It’s inspired by grapic design, and t-shirt designs.
Seems like a lot of tattoo artists these days have a background in graphic design, which is most likely how this style came to be.
Any artist with that background, should be able to help you out.
I have a graphic-design background myself, and the style pretty much looks like a graphic design scetch.
It’s a cool style, though. Been considering getting something like that myself. My artist has done some stuff like that, but he’s placed in Norway, so that won’t help you out 😛

Thanks starvega. I actually got a bunch of good results from googling some of those terms. Still looking for artists, but at least I have some idea of what it is referred to.

bellybuttontattoo had a lot of pictures that I found previously and liked and had no idea where they came from.
I’m still bummed the US has yet to catch on. One would think that at least a couple artists in NY or Cali would have some kind of international inspiration. There’s obviously a market for this kinda thing…

Anyone know of any magazines that spotlight this style? Or am I just shit out of luck all over the place?!

No worries! 🙂 It seriously took me weeks before I found out what people were calling it so I’m glad I could help out. Yeah, Belly Button is probably at the top of my list, he is pretty amazing. I went on holiday a couple of months ago and was actually in the same place as a tattoo convention that he was at, I am sooooo kicking myself that I didn’t book in with him while I was there.

It does seem to be really, really slow in catching on, but I’m guessing it’s going to be crazy popular soon enough. I don’t know of any specific magazines, sorry :-(, there really is a huge lack of information around. From searching around I can see where there’s been a couple of online articles written, but they are always out of the ordinary, there doesn’t seem to be anything specialising in it. I actually bought the domain name artbruttattoos dot com a few months back with the plan of making a place just where all of this kind of info could be stored but I haven’t done anything with it yet.

Another idea, maybe you could sent a bulk e-mail to a bunch of these artists and ask if they know of anyone in the US who could help?

And yodaddynukka, volka’s work looks awesome!!
