Hi guys,

Been a bit busy recently so havent been on the site as much as i would like but, i have got the tattoo itch, i havent been inked in a few months now and as the wait for bez has been prolonged due to money im planning other projects in the hopes i can get a smaller piece in a bit sooner. I am avoiding my back and butterflies because that is what i am saving for bez but i want something somewhere else which is generally covered by normal clothes and yet still in what i call an “attractive” position.

Then getting on to what i want, i really love feminine stuff, nothing cartoony or traditional or anything like that, i dont want roses or skulls etc, i’ve been toying with the idea of a small, delicate looking phoenix, (but i already have 2 swallows and dont want to feel like a walking bird fetish), if anyone else has any other ideas they could chuck into the mix that would be awesome. Is there any popular tattoo imagery for family?

Im open to ideas and suggestions and then when im happy with an idea i’ll source another suitable artist for it (which im sure you’ll all be able to help with that too! ๐Ÿ˜€ )

Cheers all… x

What I do is have a folder on my computer full of drawing and tattoo examples. Just go on flickr or some other search and see what you can find. I save all images I like for various reasons, color, shading, style, subject matter, etc.
Other peoples work can spark ideas, IMO I would never completly copy anothers tattoo but make variations of it to suit myself.
I would say that would be the quickest way to find something to your liking.

So I recently applied for a job at American Eagle. For those of you who don’t know what that is, its a clothing store that is in most major malls. I had the interview and they said I did great but they couldn’t hire me because of my showing tattoos. I was just shocked that a place like that would discriminate against tattoos. So my response was ” thank you, I don’t want to work somewhere that discriminates against people with tattoos anyways.”

Has anyone else had problems like this before?

Olive Garden or Darden INC are HUGE anti-tattoo Nazis. I got a cute little owl behind my ear and they made me wear my hair in a way that was covering the tattoo but was still pulled back. So I wore side pigtails (which I love anyways) for months. After I got a few more on my arms they would not allow me to pull my sleeves up. And whenever guests saw my tattoos they would comment how cute they were. My work is all public suitable and unoffensive. And I was an employee who was always punctual, worked for the company for two years and never got a single customer complaint. Needless to say I would never work for that company ever again and I would not reccomend people to, unless you want to work in the back, out of the publics eye.

I also dont like “follow your bliss”. And since you chose to get your first tattoo on your arm be lucky you didnt get that phrase because you would be constantly explaining what it means or why you got that. People love to ask what text says if you have it on your arms and if you have to explain it often it gets really old.

I got my first tattoo when I was 17 and I dont regret it, it reminds me of how I was when i was 17, I drew it myself and stressed to the artist that I wanted it exactly how I drew it. Its ugly and poorly drawn but I dont regret it. I would never regret any of my tattoos because they represent certain things in my past and I thought them through! That particular tattoo is also on my back. I wouldnt have been so bold as to get one on my arms at such a young age.

If your first thought is regret then asking strangers on a forum their opinions is not going to make you feel better about it.
Either you like it or you dont, just take it as a lesson, such is life.
Hope this doesnt turn off your interest in tattoos, a well thought out piece of work and a great artist can make a lifelong piece of unique art that you can enjoy on your body forever.

Um… I’d like to know about healing time. Since the rook is cartilage, I’d guess that it would take a year to heal. Did the healiing process give you any trouble? Was cleaning the area difficult? (The rook seems like a pretty tight space. I’d wonder how I’d work a cotton ball in there.)

I am going to the same piercing place that did my helix (they did awesome work) and I am going to start with a ring. I like the barbell better but the ring seems easier to clean, and I plan to get a barbell put in after it heals.

Did you snag the piercing on things or not really?

Honestly for me…my rook sucked! Cartilage piercings are just horrible for the healing process. They say the healing time is 6 months to year but mine took a little more than a year for my ear to be perfectly back to normal.
I had to change what ear I talked on the phone on, I couldnt sleep on that side. I can finally now play or bend my ear without pain. And it wasnt infected.
To clean it you have to fill a cup of water with the solution and dunk your ear into it for like 10 mins a couple times a day.
There are no problems with snagging on things IMO. Its so nicely tucked in your ear it isnt a problem mine was a barbell though. I would say go with a barbell, not a ring. A ring may get caught on things and when sleeping it would be able to rub on surfaces and irritate the piercing. And you do not want that raw puppy rubbing or touching anything. A barbell is not harder to clean. Just use the dipping ear in cup thing.
I’m a fan of cartilage piercings and how they look but it does kind of suck for a while.

I’m cool with it now, not sure it was totally worth it for me but that thing took alot of heal time and I feel sort of acomplished for it. ๐Ÿ™‚
If you love the look of the rook and are prepared with a possible one year healing time then go for it!

6 months out should be plenty of time to book an appointment with one of the better shops. You can email these artists directly, see if they have any availability, and even go over your concept and ideas to have a concept dine before you get there. Even May might be enough time. I mean, some of the worlds best can be a year or more out, but most good shops will have appointments during the weekdays.

Make some calls, send some emails, and get booked! Its going to be on you forever! Get what you want by who you want and enjoy!

By the way, thank God no one has said High Voltage yet…

Ok were back to the 6 month plan and finding a great artist.

Yes all of these points are on my “to-do” list…just gotta pick who I want. ๐Ÿ™‚

BTW I went to high voltage on my first trip to LA thinking it might be cool and it took me like 45 mins just to talk to the receptionist and then only to have him not give me any info and basically told me to ___off….not impressed and I didnt even see any portfolios…not for me

LA is loaded with top artists. You should start talking to them now to get locked in for a tattoo in 6 months.

Now I just figured out that my mother is going to make a trip out there in May and wants me to come and I dont know if thats enough time to get in with an artist…ugg.
If anything I can just get something on a smaller scale. A few random pieces maybe.
I appreciate the links guys. If anyone else knows of more shops they love let me know.
