I don’t want to put a massive story behind it or anything, I’m just struggling with a way to turn the idea into an image.

The artists who’ve done work for me so far (half sleeve, chest piece, calf and rib cage) are great once they have an image they do great but I’ve never asked about turning a quote into an image. I’m just looking for a few ideas to experiment with for now. I’m in to finish my chest in a few weeks so just wanted some ideas to take in and suggest to them and work from there.

Appreciate everyone’s help, maybe it is just best to work with them from scratch on it. Once I get started or get a sketch I’ll post and show everyone where i end up.

Hmm, not sure that type of lamp is what I meant, but it ould look cool under the right context.

I really like this:

So something along those lines, plenty around the lamp itself, stars, roses, maybe wings if they could be made to fit correctly, a crown if at all possible, but with the central theme of the lamp.

That’s a really cool idea iggybuddi. I thought of the lighthouse thing too initially, but wasn’t 100% on it. The stars thing I’ve never been sure about, maybe using nautical ones if I could tie them into another piece, not sure I’d want them on their own. I then found a load of pictures of old-school candle lamps, which look awesome as tattoos, so I’m now thinking something with one of those lamps, some roses and a couple of nautical stars for surrounding, anyone else got any suggestions?

I would say that the tattoo world is probably fairly male dominated, yeah. I haven’t come across any female artists in real life but I know of several. As far as women with tattoos go my girlfriend has a quite decent sized piece on her wrist and just booked to have a quite big piece on her leg, both more effeminate designs but far from the cliche really girly tattoos. As for the beauty aspect it’s all personal perception in my mind. For me a few tattoos look nice, but there is a point where I feel they can detract from how attractive a girl is, it’s all your own feeling on it though.

Hopefully I can help you dude. I’ve currently got 2 pieces, and I’m booking to start my half sleeve this afternoon. Pictures of the pieces I have can be found in my gallery, I tried uploading to the page but it just doesn’t play ball. My tattoos so far each have a meaning which is quite personal. So here we go

1st tattoo, sword, crest and quote
1) I’ve always been about looking after my family, and the quote I’d found fitted how I felt perfectly, the idea was to portray exactly how I feel/what I believe.
2) It took me about 3 designs to be happy with what I wanted. The image was the big problem, as well as where I put it. The sword and crest are from a video game, but I chose them more because they were the style I wanted then anything else.
3) Left side of my rib cage from mid-chest to hip bone

2nd tattoo, owl
1)This piece was 3 things at once really. Partly the associations with being wise, partly because owls mate for life and partly because they are seen as the ‘Angel of Death’ in some cultures, and the way they are seen is something I find particularly interested and quite believe in.
2)The design was mainly from my artist, I went in with a style and a basic reference image and a few colours and let him take it in his own direction.
3) It is on my right calf from the back of my knee to about 2/3 down my calf.

The process was very much the same for both. Once I’d spent a good few months on a concept and really being totally happy with it I went and spoke to an artist (there are 3 artists on the island where I live, 2 of which I really disklike their attitude and the other was highly reccomended by a friend) and he took my ideas on board, either deisnged them for me or tweaked my design to his taste and then booked me in. He offered any advice he could, about numbing cream on my ribs, eating before and was extremely helpful about aftercare.

After I’d had them done the reception was very mixed. A lot of people are extremely positive, even some (like my grandparents) who hate tattoos were impressed by the quality. However I have had encounters at work where individuals feel it’s stupid and immature because of the video game reference or I’m so young. But my rationale about it is that those who understand everything about what and why are supportive and encouraging, and those who mock or are discriminatory don’t understand or are just closed-minded.

Hopefully all that helps, and if anything to do with the process of getting my half sleeve is relevant I’m happy to offer anything I can

I actually played a video game when I had my last piece done and it worked wonders. My tattooist doesn’t really talk much other than letting me know what’s going on if I can’t see, so I just sat and played my 3ds the whole time and it worked wonders. The sugary food idea is a good one, I’ve never tried it but I will do from now on.

As for numbing cream it’s all dependent. I used it for some of the piece on my ribs, but it was my first tattoo so I thought I’d need it more than I did, I ended up starting the second session late so the stuff had worn off and it was nowhere near as bad as I expected. Psyching yourself properly is half the problem really.

I work in IT for a telecoms provider in the Channel Islands, where most people are what you’d call ‘upper class’ and attitudes to tattoos here are some of the least discriminatory I’ve come across. When I applied for my job one of the other applicants had a large piece on his forearm and interviewers asked about it and really paid close attention, and he eventually got the job too. I’d say about 1/3 of the people I work with have one or more tattoos, one of the managers has a full sleeve and it’s as though it’s invisible.

Even my girlfriend, who works in a very upmarket law firm where there is a ‘no tattoo’ policy has never had any problems. She has a fairly sizeable one on her wrist and just wears a long sleeve shirt/cardigan for client meetings and they’re perfectly happy.

Don’t know how to compare really, as I don’t have the most experience, but my owl piece, which is about 7-8 inches tall by about 3-4 wide and full colour took at most 4 hours over 2 sessions. I think really 11 hours might be a bit much but as has been said before the quality is extremely high and it’s comparitively cheap, the owl cost me about £280, which is about $400. It’s your call but I’d go with quality over speed every time.

Have a look at the owl:

Apparently the image uploader built into the forum engine doesn’t like deivantart either, that’s not helpful.

Have a look in my album, there’s the work I’ve got and the design I tried linking.

Thanks, I need people to just make me feel less like I’m potentially gonna do something really stupid.

I’ve got an idea at the moment, how would something like this translate to a tattoo?

It would be colour, and I can get the coloured references if that’s relevant

Yes, I’m pretty sure I won’t regret it. I’ve been gaming a long time and what the piece is going to be a metaphor for is always gonna be with me, so it’s really just referencing the video game as a visual representation
