ff the fucking hook! Great tat, I look forward to seeing it healed. Your tats are incredible, can you let me know the process that you go through with your artist to get from start to finish? how does something like this happen?

thanks for the kind words everyone!

well for me, i do A LOT of research on artists and once i pick the right one, i know whatever design i want, that artist will do it right. coincidentally, i had a consultation witch nick chaboya when i wanted to get my bio gear half sleeve but being the stand up guy that he is, told me straight up that that wasnt his forte and he would rather do the other designs i mentioned. but at that time i already made up my mind on the bio gear piece.

for this particular piece, i actually wanted this nio warrior for a long time. the nio warriors protect the gates of the todaiji temple in japan. one on the left and one on the right side of the entrance. being japanese i wanted to rep my culture. i love traditional japanese pieces but i always like being unique and out of the norm so i was looking for something different yet still be undeniably japanese. i actually got a tattoo of a nio warrior before this one on my right forearm by aaron bell, which was my first “big” piece.

tho i was happy with the pice, what i was envisioning was something more realistic, so i researched and researched until i found someone who i thought was perfect.

i am so lucky to have work by these world class artists who usually are booked months, if not years, in advance in the timeframe i did! sorry for the long rant, i just never get to tell my story much and i am honored that you took the time to ask!

HAHA we have interacted before, I think. I found Nick on another tat forum when someone (I think it was you) posted that they went to see nick about a biomech piece and he sent them to someone else. He responded to clarify what happened and I saw that post, clicked on the link under nicks name and 4 months later I am getting tatted by him. So, Indirectly, I have you to thank for finding nick.

The piece is sick. I mean like really good… I don’t see many tat’s that send me reeling but this is one. It’s funny how art can do that to you, I mean I’ve seen a ton of tats on this site that were ok in my eyes but people were doing backflips over them.

Anyway, how do you get in with these guys? I’m already planning my next one and I want someone at this cailber to do my work as well. Any tips on getting their attention?

thanks again! haha that was me indeed. i still think nick is a little peeved that i went somewhere else.but i would love to get some work from him in the future. i think he is def a top 10 maybe even top 5 in the bay area.

yeah im really lovin how this piece is turning out and the background will be sick too!

have u decided on what u want? how soon do u want to start? the state of grace convention is comin up in october in sf and that convention is always stacked.

i think if an artist sees that u are a die hard collector it is that much easier to book appts with.

Gsouder if you go to a few conventions and get a few appointments there, meet a few people you’ll get a nice collection of tatts and contacts then as yodaddynukka said it will be much easier to get in with the best.

Also on topic: Love this piece, and your leg piece and the bio gears. Love all your work really.

thank you! right now i have a probable appointment with nikko hurtado to add to my “where the wild things are” leg sleeve. and i also have an idea for my back that i havent decided on an artist yet. and i am trying to get robert hernandez to do portraits of my son and daughter on my chest. damn why do tattoos have to be so damn addicting!
