I’m having a total block. I want this tattoo either covered or incorporated into something else. I got this when I didn’t have much exposure to really great tattoos. Now I find it extremely boring, especially compared to my other arm.

Here are some things to keep in mind. I want it to go to the elbow. It may or may not go over the shoulder to the chest. Here are some ideas and things I like…

Skulls
Halloween
Sugar Skulls
Superman
Batman
Gambling
Pinups
Flames
Lots and lots of color

Or come up with something else. I don’t want to go Japanese because I already have a large dragon on the other arm. Nothing tribal.

Here it is…

Maybe turn that into a skull of some sort with flames coming up from below it and around the sides. And how about a “dark” style pinup below it that could incorporate the gambling theme, cards/dice etc with the flames around that too?

you can look at the ideas and couple them together for instance, pin-ups with gambling… girls and money as they say, and flames and skulls, but not flames and pin-ups ๐Ÿ˜›

its a wide list, but i like the idea of some pin-ups and some of the ole roulette/blackjack ๐Ÿ˜› its a pretty rare to see a ‘gambling’ tatt ๐Ÿ˜›

failing that, you could get a really nice intricate sugar skull, going from just above your elbow to just onto your shoulder, wrapping around your arm

but yeh, try and couple the things that go together there, and work from there… batman & superman, pinups & gambling, flames & skulls, sugar skulls and halloween maybe, althought they have no relationship with halloween.

pin-up throwing casino chips in the air ๐Ÿ˜› could be very colourful

The first thing I thought of was a skull. But really there are no limits to what you can mix, you just have to figure out how to mix them correctly. If you wanted to do the pin- up girl and flames then you could simply make your pin-up a devil girl. Actually a devil girl pin-up at a casino in hell could make an interesting theme.

Hmmm, was pretty sure I’d seen a really good pin up that was “darker” if yu get me, and that had flames around it. It looked pretty awesome. Was just thinking that what is there at the minute is in more or less of a skull shape so that should be pretty cool, however having just flames down to the elbow would make it look like there were loads of flames and nothing else, hence the pinup/gambling suggestion.

Its an interesting one this though. Let us know what you think of.

How about a colourful biomech half-sleeve?
Something like below, but maybe purples or dark blues to cover the tribal, stopping at the elbow.
I had about three guys come see my artist during my session yesterday with wanting to cover up tribal and my artist suggested biomech to them all. He reckons it works a treat covering tribal.

Ok, I can’t add the pic, my computer is trying to kill itself ๐Ÿ˜ก

Yeah,
Another strike against tribal is that they are so hard to cover!
A cover up is not like slapping a new coat of paint over an old one. The newer the ink, the harder the job, and the more black work in the original, the harder the job. The artist that suggested biomech is probably right. You can work that into the existing ink with the best results. The density and saturation of the existing tribal is going to deal you fits trying to lay a pin up on top of that. A design using cool tones (blue, purple, green, black) is gonna be your best bet as they have the highest density of piment to cover that tribal. Maybe a Paul Boothe style B/G? Eyeball with tentacles?
Barring going darker, you may want to have some laser removal sessions to blast the darkest areas before trying to get a cover-up. Its fast becoming THE way to start a cover up.
Good luck.

Thanks for all the feedback. I like the ideas so far. I would rather spend my money on some creative “fixes” rather than the laser. But I agree that it would be the best way to go.

As for the biomechanical, I have thought of that. I like the looks of some of them, but I’m afraid I would tire of it. Then I would really be screwed. Gonna go check out the Paul Boothe that was recommended.

I’m leaning toward a quarter-turn skull to fit in the angle on the tricep. Maybe a realistic skull that has the sugar skull decorations. Hmmmm… So if I go with a sugar type skull, what would complement it and add color behind/around the tribal? Flames? Roses?

More ideas are greatly appreciated. I don’t normally ask for advice, but I’ve hung around this forum long enough to know I’ll get some really killer advice.

the problem being is that this is such a large dark piece, its very hatd to find or create anything that will go straight over the top of it.
i was looking at possibly hiding some of it in something like a woman drawing i did a little while ago, but unfortunately it is too big to cover with her hair and head… then i was leaning towards possibly gambling theme of say …. 3 or 4 playing cards cards fanned out, then poker chips above them, then some old school dark roses goint over and slightly down each side a little bit…. place some dark cobwebs behind the roses, then a banner on there saying something like “life’s a gamble”. but drawing a quick sketch of it and photoshoping it on to your image it just didnt cover it very well at all…

i think my best suggestion is going to be the expensive option….”laser” this should lighten it down so that it opens your options up and then a decent coverup would be possible

Thanks for the input Outlaw. I can see all the problem you’ve pointed out. I’m gonna keep searching and brainstorming. I’ll go biomechanical before the laser.

Thanks again

ahh so thats all you miss , what about me

well from what i can tell its the shape of it thats causing the biggest cover up problem !
the only idea that really springs to mind is that they is enough gaps for small stars and then fill the rest in likes its a nights sky and then blow it have a really cool old school owl ๐Ÿ˜‰
fill the sides with some branches and then you will have your self a half sleeve .

by the way that idea is not free and i will accept payments through paypal ๐Ÿ˜ก

You get a gold star for creativity!!! That would work, but….I just can’t see myself with an owl on my arm ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks BK

What can we say Butter_Fly? You’re just not as special as Lord Hull, the Outlaw, and good ole KH. But if it makes you feel better, you’re easily the hottest of us. Also, the least prone to random violence. Not that you got alot of competition, but hey, it’s something.

As for where I’ve been Ontwo my man, I just got your PM a few minutes ago–haven’t been online much today, been working on my portfolio.

Like has been said, the size and the placement of that fucker makes it a hard one to tackle. Maybe you may want to blast it with a laser a little bit first to widen your options.

Have you considered a massive goat’s skull? The large curling horns could curl up onto your shoulders and chest a little, while the actual skull and the hair could fall down your arm. It should cover it and give you one bad ass tattoo.

Bonus points: it’ll scare Christians.

Also, if you want to go full sleeve later, that imagery will work well going into a Halloween themed design.

Love. Peace. Metallica.
