It’s a feathered dragon – I suppose a cross between a dragon and a pheonix

I bake as a hobby. Specialty is pizza, calzone, bread, and I’m working on pretzels. As far as tattoos go, I’m only qualified to get them.

I loved being a baker – but I’m not such a fan of the hours. I still do confectionery, fancy cakes and that, but mostly just for friends. No one wants to pay for the hours you need to put in for those things 🙂

I still make a mean calzone!

Hey man I’m training in a small studio in ashbourne, its called Inkredible Inks, I’m there just 3 months now
I’ve been doing mainly script tattoos and small tattoos, just trying to better myself 🙂
When I have time at home I try draw big pieces and ideas and when I’m in the studio not tattooing or cleaning I draw flash Ideas
What are the laws like in Australia with tattooing? have you been in the same studio since you got there or did you have to move every six months to get the visa?
I’d like to do that some day when I’ve a few years studio experience behind me and a better portfolio

Lol, I’m no artist – just a collector, so far of pretty crappy tattoos – let’s just say I got my first tattoo at The Mint in Dublin! I joined here to learn how to tell the good from the bad.

I don’t know much about the laws for tattooing, but I can fill you in a bit about the visa system 🙂 If you wanna come out here permanently, you won’t get a visa as a tattoo artist – but, if you have another trade to get your visa you don’t need to work in that trade – I used my qualification as a baker but I don’t work as one. Other than that – when you have a few years experience, come out on a working holiday visa find a tattoo shop, impress them and they might sponsor you for a permanent visa.

Hi Boulger, welcome to the forum. I am from Dublin (Tallaght) too – though I moved to Australia 4 years ago. Best move I ever made! What tattoo studio are you training in?

Don’t be offended – I’ll admit, the honesty here can be, erm, refreshing – but the folks here know tattoos and give good advice. If you love your tattoos, that is all that matters in the end – and quite frankly, there will be always some one who doesn’t like your tattoos – that’s their problem, not yours.

It is well worth considering their advice though – particularly when it comes to choosing artists. I am only starting to learn how to spot good work and I’ve looked at many many portfolios trying to choose an artist I was happy with and asking the advice of the folk here really helped me recognize the good from the bad.

Wow, how big are you planning to have it?

I reckon it will be most of my lower back – about 25 – 30cms.

No, I’m after a more a western style dragon. I sent some art work that I like to the tattoo shop and they recommended him. I will be interested to see what ideas he comes up with.

I am saving, saving, saving to fund a cover up of the dragon on my lower back – I still want a dragon, but less tramp stamp, more serious tattoo, this time 🙂

I think that pretty much anything I want at the moment would be regarded as a small tattoo – I didn’t mean to sound like I wanted to take an artist for a test drive, but it’s frustrating, to go into a shop and not be taken seriously because what you want is a smaller piece – which is what I now feel happened with my last one – they gave me the impression that they were confident that there apprentice could do the piece I wanted and because it was a reputable place, I thought it would be good to give the apprentice a shot – I trusted them and obviously that was stupid of me.

Melbourne is about a 10 hour drive – which is not out of the question in the future, but at the moment my car wouldn’t make it.

I have had a look at Matthew Bumer Joyce, his work looks good and he also has a few smaller tats on his facebook page, so that gives me hope.

@GrayCatLove
– there’s only one thing I hate worse than doing something stupid, and that’s doing the same stupid thing over again – seems here is as good a place as any to learn.

So, it seems that I may have a problem getting a good artist to do smaller work 🙁 At least that is the response I’ve gotten from one of the places I contacted.

I can understand why more in demand artists don’t want to do smaller pieces, but at the same time, I’m not going to trust someone to do a big piece until they can do a satisfactory smaller piece.

Other options are Vamp body art, Burnin Hell tattoos, Tattoo masterz.

I’m so confused! I’m sorry if I seem like an idiot – Thank you all for your help so far.

I am making some enquiries – there is a place not too far from me called Art n Soul that seems to be highly recommended. I filled in there contact form for them to call me.

My next planned tattoo is text – controversial, I know, and I also know how important it is to have nice clean lines for text to look good – so now I’m really nervous, I want to get it right.

A bit far from me (2000 km) I posted some links to local studios, but they are caught up waiting on Mods.

What should I look for, when picking a good artist?

Lol, only a 2000 km trip!! These are some of the studios I have to choose from – I will go and do some reconnaissance tomorrow.
