Hey guys, my name is Charlie and I’m an anthropology student at the University of North Texas. I am writing a mini ethnography on tattoos and the culture that surrounds them and I need to gather some data. I would really appreciate it if anyone wouldn’t mind taking the time to answer these few questions about tattoos.
Thanks

Hi Charles

It helps if you involves yourself a little more as part of the forum or post up your own ink or ideas for ink or if you hate ink and the reasons why etc. Otherwise it is a bit like somebody pushing a clipboard under your nose in the street.

However in answer to your questions;

1. Matthew – I do not tend to disclose my last name and really it should not be required for the research.

2. 33

3. Ethnicity – Caucasian.

4. I am a senior fraud investigator.

5. I currently have 3 tattoos – both upper arms and full back.

6. I have 2 main preferences portrait work (both black and shade and colour) and Far Eastern art. I also love biblical/religious art.

7. Reasons for getting my tattoos. The first is a portrait of my wife. I got it so I am never alone and I love her. My lion of Judah is a statement of Jewish heritage and showing that not all tattoos are ugly or taboo.

My backpiece is because I studied psychology and criminal psychology for a fair while and realised the following;

That in order to be taken seriously as a serial killer I would have to be heavily tattooed – particularly the back region – thus flaunting my lack of inhibitions and sexual dominance (just call me Hully Love).

That my backpiece was required to emphasise power and sexual sadism (a standard requirement of heavily tattooed serial killers) but without this being immediately visible afterall I had to be in a position to lure or entice my victims with a sense of security yet curiosity. It also provides me with that sense of potency I can only match by wearing the skins of my victims.

That is why I chose the dragon as a sign of dominance and power. The geisha is a sign of submission in abstract form of bondage.

The tiger is the indicator that my mind is in schism and could be said to represent the rebellion of my id against the soulless monster that I am.

8. I like to keep my tattoos hidden so that my victims have no clue until I hunt them in the nude. Also my day job has a nil ink policy so no hands face or neck and too hot in the office for long sleeves all year around.

Or it could be that I am just pulling your leg 😉 and the backpiece is inspired by iconic Japanese art which I have a passion for because I find it beautiful.

In all seriousness if I can help any further or you want indepth answers just let me know by PM.

Take care
Matthew

First of all… you’re lucky Sherav decided to answer your survey or no one would have. Second it’s a good thing you had specific questions as to what you wanted people to answer. Otherwise, you would have gotten no answers.

1.Name: Cory
2.Age: 23
3.Ethnicity: Caucasian
4.Occupation: Automotive Retail/Student
5.How many tattoos do you have? 1 rib panel
6.What style of tattoo do you prefer? Mine is Japanese
7.What are your reasons for getting tattoos? My main reason for getting my tattoo was to never forget a lesson learned. Each time something huge changes my life and I learn a great deal from it, I’ll design something so that it’s never forgotten. My dragon means that I am my own worst enemy.
8.What are your restrictions on tattoos? I haven’t picked a career path yet but until then I won’t get my feet, legs, lower arms, face, or neck inked.

5.How many tattoos do you have? Well…Three would be the technical number. A UV ring on my finger. A hand bursting into flames with a dove escaping the flames on my back. And a tree that covers most of my side.
6.What style of tattoo do you prefer? I tend to like all kinds of tattoos. I’m a big fan of the classical style…Hindu art is gorgeous to me…Japanese…
7.What are your reasons for getting tattoos? My first tattoo is the one I got on my upper back. It has a very personal meaning to me, that nobody even knows about. But the main meaning behind it is “rising above the negative influences of humanity.” After I got this tattoo…I simply became hooked. I’m in love with the art. The culture. Everything.
8.What are your restrictions on tattoos? Personally, I’m really young…I know that people change. And I know that artistic tastes change. So for me, I really don’t want anything visible until I’m in my late 20’s.
