Hi, I’m a third year student at Sunderland University and have signed up to see if you guys could help me out. As part of my dissertation, i have to research and design a brand new magazine concept. I have decided to create a new Tattoo Magazine due to my keen interest in tattoos and body modification. I was hoping you could answer some questions (which wouldn’t take more than a few minutes) so i can conclude some market research to justify my idea. Thanks.

1. Which Tattoo Magazines do you normally purchase? (Please state)

2. How much do you normally pay for each of these magazines?

3. How much would you be comfortable paying for a new tattoo Magazine on the market?

4. Which aspects of a Tattoo Magazine do you enjoy the most? (photography, features, reviews, adverts etc) (Please state)

5. And which aspects do you dislike? If any. (please state)

6. Would you enjoy reading tips and advice from professionals in the industry in regards to tattooing techniques?

7. What new feature would you most like to see in a new Tattoo Magazine?

8. Are you male or female?

9. How old are you?

10. What music genre would you say best defines your character and personality?

Please feel free to add any other comments which you think i may benefit from.

I would really appreciate it if you could take the time to fill this in, Thanks.

Michael Young.

1. I normally dont purchase tattoo mags.

2. N/A

3. 10 dollars

4. Artist interviews and portfolio spots.

5. None

6. Definitly not technical tips unless. It’s a professionals only mag. I think techniques need to be taught and learned during apprenticeship. I think it would only encourage scratchers.

7. I would like to see whats being tattooed in different parts of the world.

8. Male

9 32

10. Anything but country music.

Good luck with the survey.

1. Flash, and Tattoo (on occasion, when I glance at one on the shelf)
2. About 7 bucks or so.
3. 10 bucks.
4. The photography and artist interviews.
5. The advertisements for tattoo stuff (machines, ink, etc), sometimes it’s a bit much..I’m not an artist, so it doesn’t appeal much to me.
6. Not in the least. I agree with Patrick…it would just encourage scratcher, and god knows we don’t need that!
7. More history of tattooing, and more involved interviews with well established artists, and even newer ones, to tell their story of how they tapped into the tattoo world.
8. Female
9. 25
10. Punk and classic rock.

6. Would you enjoy reading tips and advice from professionals in the industry in regards to tattooing techniques? a lot of the tips/tricks need to remain silent so tattooers have to learn from one another and do good apprenticeships here’s a recent conversation on this topic

1. Which Tattoo Magazines do you normally purchase? (Please state) Flash and whatever’s on the shelf

2. How much do you normally pay for each of these magazines?6 or 7 bucks?

3. How much would you be comfortable paying for a new tattoo Magazine on the market? 6 or 7 bucks

4. Which aspects of a Tattoo Magazine do you enjoy the most? (photography, features, reviews, adverts etc) (Please state)
Showcasing a single artist’s work. I like to see the spectrum of their talent.

5. And which aspects do you dislike? If any. (please state) That about half of the mags I look through have nothing interesting to me. The art is usually fantastic, but they aren’t reaching all of their subscribers.

6. Would you enjoy reading tips and advice from professionals in the industry in regards to tattooing techniques? If it’s not too technical for me. I just enjoy getting them, don’t know alot about different “techniques.” Maybe I’d like it if it could be explained as to how it would affect me, the person receiving. eg This style seems to be less painful than that…

7. What new feature would you most like to see in a new Tattoo Magazine? Rather than categorizing by subjects, maybe categorizing by style (traditional, tribal, noveau, portrait, etc)

8. Are you male or female? F

9. How old are you? 32

10. What music genre would you say best defines your character and personality? Rock

1. Which Tattoo Magazines do you normally purchase? Nordic Tattoo Mag

2. How much do you normally pay for each of these magazines?Norwegian krones, but about 13dollars.

3. How much would you be comfortable paying for a new tattoo Magazine on the market?15 dollars. Take into consideration that I live in one of the most expencive countries in the world.

4. Which aspects of a Tattoo Magazine do you enjoy the most? (photography, features, reviews, adverts etc) (Please state) Feauteres and interviews.

5. And which aspects do you dislike? If any. (please state) The arrogance in some magazines

6. Would you enjoy reading tips and advice from professionals in the industry in regards to tattooing techniques? Only thing would be superficial about techniques used to get different looks and effects, but no in-dept information that could teach scratchers.

7. What new feature would you most like to see in a new Tattoo Magazine? More about the people. Not only the artists, but those who carry tattoos, the story behind them etc. Not the deep, sad stories, but in general what inspires people to get tattooed.

8. Are you male or female? Female

9. How old are you? 20

10. What music genre would you say best defines your character and personality? Hip hop and rock.
