So I have absolutely no ink and no piercings. I admire those that do and have a great appreciation for the art that it is. I am 53 years old and think it is about time I got one, but… it is permanent and I would like to hear how some of you went about deciding on and designing your first tatoo. This might give me some insight. Thanks.-Ray

Hey Ray, Welcome to forums.

I am also new here and just got my first tattoo at 40, with many more now planned. You only live once and should try most things. I am loving it and wished I did it sooner but having done it later in life probably meant I went to a decent artist and never got a tattoo I would now regret.

I have lost a lot of friends so my idea for a religious tattoo came from that to start with and the rest of my ideas stemmed from that really.

It’s a matter of selecting a place on your body, shape and a style you like and going for it. I got my first one a number of years ago when I was 18, flash from the wall (now buried under a ever growing sleeve). The only real advice I can give you is don’t be afraid of BIG. I think your question is a little incorrect as in then I went to a shop (the internet was very much an infant) and not many to choose from. I had seen a guy with a what I thought was neat looking snake and chose something similar. Now I have gone past big, I first think of the effect of the overall tattoo from a distance then like Google earth zoom in until I have the fine details – of something that fits in with the rest I have and I like. As it’s your first forget face, neck and hands. One of the most common starting places is the upper arm. Some parts of the body hurt more than others although this also varies from person to person. For your first tattoo you are best not going for challenging spot like the ribs, elbow and knees. Once you have your tattoo you maybe of the shyer group, especially at your starting age and you may find you will grow into your tattoo, as in it will be covered and gradually get more and more exposure in public, that will mean an area easily covered. I don;t like theses little tattoos on the shoulder e.g. the Yin and Yang that is about 1″ /2.5cm in diameter where the shoulder could have easily accommodated one 5 times the size. Have a look at Fyeahtattoos and the albums here. Find a concept then go for it. Unless someone has recommended a tattooist / shop, have a lok in a few that are close by. The shop should be clean and the staff friendly. Have a look at their portfolio after telling them what style you are after as some tattooists like to specialise. I would suggest going prepared to put down a deposit and depending on what you are getting there maybe a couple of visits working on the design. You can be to young to get a tattoo, but never to old, well the skin of a 90 year old maybe be to fragile to tattoo.

Welcome to the forum! I was 50 when I got my first tattoo, so you are never too old! I’m turning 52 in September and I was just in downtown Baltimore taking a look at a design I had my artist draw up for my second tattoo! I loved what he did with my ideas and am scheduled for next Saturday! How I decided on my first one, well, I had been wanting it for a long time and once my husband said yes (took me a year of begging and deal making), I went for it. I did a lot of research into artists etc first. I had all ready known what I wanted, I simply chose my passion, which happens to be Freddie Mercury. If you have a passion, you might consider that for a tattoo. It may be that you simply see a tattoo design that you really like that has no particular meaning to you at all.

I decided on my particular placement (outer right calf) because I wanted to be able to look at it OFTEN and be able show it when I wanted to and cover it when I didn’t want to show it. Take your time, look around on the Internet, at the forum here, and think about what really turns you on.

I’ve got a couple picture albums here on the forum and there are some pics of my Freddie tattoo there should you care to take a look. I also have some short video clips of my tattoo experience on youtube. youtube.com/msmercuryrising You’d have to scroll down quite a few videos to find those, though. Anyway, I love my tattoo and I’m so happy to have my Freddie tattoo! I enjoy it every single day! It brings me a lot of pleasure. I think this next one, my second one, is all hubby is going to put up with, sadly. I had other ones planned in my head, but won’t ever get them. ๐Ÿ™ I can dream, though! ๐Ÿ™‚

34 and still haven’t pulled the trigger. You’re not the only one doing all this thinking. I have a plan, its for a 3 letter monogram (for my son) somehow built into a maple leaf (cause I am proud Canadian). I have yet to step foot into a shop, that is next. Good luck!!

Once you make that leap and step inside you will be pleasantly surprised, not all tattooists are serial killers… You will find most are just like you, only with a bit more ink on them than you have at the moment, but that will change.
