So here goes mine…late 20’s, former military, current world traveler.

Had the perfect life until cancer ruined it for me by killing my beautiful wife a little over a month ago. Step daughter is now living with her biological father in LA, which is why I’ll end up San Diego before the end of the year when I come back from work. She’s pretty much the only ray of light left for me and a constant reminder of why I have to succeed in life and not let it break me. Five year olds have amazing depth at times and can put things in perspective.

My job’s to babysit people who shouldn’t need supervision. In a sense I hate that people like me are needed, but I love the paychecks. So we’ll let that train wreck for a little longer…

Grew up in Frankfurt, Germany and lived there until I joined the Army at 18. Been bouncing around in the US since and have spent the last five out of six years overseas. Looks like that’ll continue for another 2-3 years and then I’ll find something else to do.

Always wanted to get ink but never found a good reason to get some. Been thinking for years that I should get Horimono done but didn’t want to get it done in the US and lacked the time to commit to traveling for leisure…when I’m already gone 6-9 months out of the year.

Plan on flying out to Yokohama this fall and see if I can get an appointment with Horiyoshi III at his place. If it works out, I’ll be a happy inked up camper. Now I just have to figure out how to get a hold of him.

Already like some of the stuff I’ve read and promise not to be the NTAC around here asking questions like “why do you think people will look at me funny if I have a swastika on my forehead?”.

Thanks for giving me a spot on the board.

Nomad, im sorry for your loss. it sounds like this horimino will have tons of meaning to you. If you could get tattooed by the master HIII that would be sick. I really dont know how you go about making an appointment with him. i know he has a website and a myspace, but its really hard to navigate because its in japanese. What i ideas do you have for your ink? I know there is a guy in san jose maybe that used to apprentice with Horiyoshi III not too long ago. He is an american and he goes by Horitaka. I dont know his american name though. His work is amazing also. This might be an option for you. Travelling to Japan might get expensive for big pieces. Good luck and i hope this helped.

TS and Patrick,

Thanks for the welcomes and for your condolences. She was a great woman, wife and mom – and she was only 34. Life’s not fair, so much is for sure.

The horimono I want is going to include a Samurai, Koi and a dragon. I’ve seen a multitude of pics online and need some creative guidance. If this is going to happen I’m setting it up to be a long process.

Horitaka and Horiyoshi III apparently had a falling out from what I gathered online. I’m not sure over what other than “personal differences” that are stated online. I would be willing to see Horitaka if he’s still in San Jose as that’s certainly a whole lot closer to me.

I have a friend who visited Horiyoshi III and had a shoulder piece done a few years ago. He’s going to make all the calls for me as he’s fluent in Japanese. And the site is hard to navigate!

Thanks for the welcomes again. Any advice and input is welcome!

How much did HIII charge your friend per hour? Check out my tattooist’s website. He tattoos in japan 4-5 times a year at 3 tides tattoo. He speciallizes in Japanese style tattooing. He is in Austin Tx. His name is Chris Trevino he goes by Horimana. He has some pretty sick work on his web site, you might get some pretty good ideas there.

I think, IIRC, it cost him a total of around $5k for an sleeve. I did not ask how often he went. Hell, I should get him to join this forum!

Checked out Chris Trevino’s and Horitaka’s sites. I prefer Horitaka’s work (from what I’ve seen), which is convenient since he’s still in SJ. Without derailing this intro too much…did you have any work done by CT that you have pictures up of?

As far as placement, where do you think your going to put your work.
