I am a newbie, so i’m sorry for jumping straight in and asking questions.
I am looking for a beautiful, yet subtle first tattoo (my reasons for which I have outlined in the introduction section)… I would actually really like a snow flake and it has been suggested to me that this could be done as a white tattoo with some shading or some kind of tinted blush?
Can anyone tell me anything about white tattoo’s?
Is this something that all tattooists do or is it a specialist thing?
Would you have any other suggestions on how I could get a pretty snowflake tattoo?
Or any recommendations on a suitable artist? I live in north England (near leeds_ but would be happy to travel.

Thanks

welcome to the forum and thanks for doing an intro before jumping straight in:D

white is not really recommended for a tattoo like you are wanting, we normally only use white to mix lighter shades or used to add highlights in a tattoo.
the problem being is that white ink always changes colour and becomes yellow’ish pale looking.

the way i would recommend is having the snowdrop left in your skin colour and have just a little bit of white shading and highlights in the flake itself, but then have some subtle dark and grey shading around it to make it really show up nicely, or have you thought of placing something behind the snowflake, something like leaves from a tree that have that real nice autum winter redish browns to them, ad that to some nice dark shading and the snowflake will stand out realy well.

Thank you Outlaw, I appreciate your time, and I think you might be right…. I really love the idea of the autumn shade leaves… autumn is my favourite season. strange because I never imagined myself having ‘coloured’ tattoos.
I had a quick look at your pictures (I hope you don’t mind) and I LOVE the henna type lizard foot tattoo.
I would love to incorporate the snowflake into a bigger design at a later date and think that if I had the snowflake under my bellybutton (maybe slightly to one side) then later I could add a delicate henna type pattern branching out, up my side/rib cage and down onto my hip? I would want the snowflake hidden but the henna part would then be on display if I wanted it to be.
Not sure if the leaves would then fit in with this design? But I still LOVE the idea, I’m going to have a think and see if I can make it work – and I am open to suggestions.
For personal reasons I want to get the snowflake part of the design done quite soon, I feel that I need to do this.
I assume I can do this in stages… a subtle snowflake, then can the background be added? or was the whole point for the background to create the snowflake?

Thank you so much for your help

White doesnt hold up. Like Outlaw said above, maybe a bit of shading. A suggestion, just get the snowflake done in the light blue, with the white as hightlights to show reflection. That way, you still have the white and blue, and its doesnt stand out to much.

One thought… will UV White fade like the normal White does? Would using UV White perhaps work better and give a more permanent result?

Thanks for your replies guys, you have all been very welcoming and helpful.
I wasn’t aware that there was a white and also a UV white – how interesting… I am finding it all hard to visualise.
I’ve been google imaging pictures of snowflakes so I am going to play around with pen and paper and see what I come up with.
Any other suggestions welcome… if I can get my head around the best way to do this and find a suitable artist then I will get this done quite soon.

Well, there are several UV colors available… I just assume there’s white in the mix. Although, come to think of it, maybe an UV White would be too dull without the blacklight and would show even less than a normal one.

Here’s basically how it works:

With the Skin Candy UV white, you can see it a little bit with out the blacklight. Its very light, like the discoloration of a light scar. But hey, if your hanging out in a room with blacklights….You will be the coolest!

Skin Candy has a youtube demo out there with them using the ink if you want to search it out.

Hi

As already said pure white ink does not stay in the skin very well over protracted periods of time.
I would also advise against UV inks – they have not been made for human consumption and no long term effect testing has been done on them yet. (See my blog before diving in).

I can recommend Phil Webster of Skin Chaos (The Tattoo House in Dewsbury) as an artist and he does some great work mixing light blues and purples to white so that it really gives a great highlighting effect.

Check out the thread seventh sitting as he used this on my backpiece for the white highlighting on my tiger and will also show his work.

If you do use him just say Matthew (the backpiece guy from Leeds) recommended and I am sure he will give you a very reasonable deal.

Take Care
Matthew
