When I was young and stupid I got some home made tatts on my arm using indian ink, now in my 30’s I’m wanting to get them covered by some pro tattoo’s. My question is though, what colors can be used to cover the indian ink?
Hi Mudd
It would help to have a picture of the tattoo but usually most inks will cover them up.
The lighter shades such as yellows, whites, pinks will probably struggle but a decent artist should be able to cover them up with a darker ink (black, purple, deep red) or bold colours to make sure that you have a better tattoo.
At worst you may need a few laser sessions to lighten it but i would recommend speaking with a tattoo artist before hand as it is expensive, can be painful, and the results can vary a lot.
Also do not be tempted to just jump in with a tribal piece (unless that is what you want) as many shops may try and push this as the easiest option. An exprienced and decent artist should be able to offer something more varied.
Don’t worry I have seen hundreds of decent cover ups done over some really big DIY tats.
Take Care (and don’t forget to post up when you have them done).

My suggestion is to find an artist that is well versed in covers and ask their opinion of what can be done. I helps to have an idea of what kinda of design you want for your “new” tattoo. I have a cover and so does my fiancee and they were both drawn customly for each of us and the individual tattoo. I have to agree that most inks should cover well enough. Having a great artist that has done many covers is critical because they will know how to best work the old tattoo into the new design so that it’s disguised/covered. I also have to agree with avoiding a tribal (unless that is your TRUEST desire). Nothing screams cover more than a bunch of black ink.
Love, Peace and Chicken Grease…
Thank you for the comments. I was thinking tribal because of the layout of the tattoo’s. I will try and get a pic posted up to give you all a better Idea.
Just know that tribal isn’t your only option. Since ink last a lifetime without some major money invovled…know all your options.
You may try adding in “blade tribals” to make it slightly more unique.
They’re just what they say on the can–tribals that instead of being solid black lines are instead made out of blades. Having them in with the traditional tribals gives it a killer look.
Love. Peace. Metallica.
One reason I was thinking of tribal is because it may not be as expensive as something more elaborate? Heres the pic’s. I’ve been trying to photoshop something to see how it would look but no luck seeing as my photoshop skills are less then average. Any and all recommendations most welcomed:D.

If you still like the image (a jester I presume) then you could just get it reworked…cleaned up and colored…could be a pretty sick tatto reworked (and honestly looks better than some other home tattoos I’ve seen).
I’m actually wanting them both to be covered…..preferably by the same tatt:D
Then I would talk to an artist that you like that has cover knowledge and see what he/she says…but that’s just me. I’m not really a fan of tribal at all…so maybe that’s a part of it. Especially when you want them both incorporated into one tattoo…they could simply trace your arm and work the design over it. This way they know what colors and design elements they have to work with.
Below is a REALLY HORRIBLE pic of my cover…the butterfly..it cover two stars…one blue and one pink…
(BTW..nice arm) LOL
Hi
Just had a thought I was tinkering with a tattoo idea for your cover up.
As Peachie suggested the jester idea is not a bad one – this idea is basically a half sleeve and would cover up both tattoos.
It is a traditional jester face with the bells on the hat. The face would be split into two halves. The first half would be a normal human looking face with a downturned smile, and maybe a few tears pouring from the eye.
The other half would be a demonic face with a leering smile and fangs. This could show the comedy and tradgedy of life and the stage. (I always think of it as the ‘Duality Jester’)
The lower half of the could be the jester shoulders and chest piece which would cover up the second tattoo.
If this is not to your liking let me know your tastes and I will post up some links or ideas for a sleeve cover – both can be done without tribal (unless you want tribal of course).

Do you have a drawing of your jester idea?
Hi Mudd
Sadly I am a terrible artist what I tend to do is scout images and get a professional to draw my stuff up based on what i want.
here are a few links for images that might inspire the jester tattoo..

The human face side with tears should be easy enough – these are just a few images to give you an idea of what you may want.
