Quick cooling igneous rocks are said to have an aphanitic texture, which is extremely fine grained. This commonly occurs in extrusive lava flows, where the liquid is exposed to the environment and cools so quickly that crystals have no time to grow within the liquid void.

In other words, crystals need time to grow, so if the liquid they grow from solidifies quickly then what you get will only be very small.
