Over hear in the colonies a common responce to seeing something ghastly like a bad suit or dress, or an ugly car, would be “I wouldn’t be caught dead in that suit” It’s a way of being a snobbish. The fact that the really ugly vehicle is a hearse makes the line somewhat humorous.
