Justin Barnett: What does the Bible say about tattoos?

The Bible does not give any clear directions about tattoos. Some Christians rely on Leviticus 19:28. It is, however, not reliable because the word ‘tattoo’ does not appear in most English translations. The verse speaks about making cuts on the body. These cuts are not necessarily tattoos because, in the context, God was speaking against religious practices of Pagans which may have involved making cuts or shaving hair for dead relatives. In the New Testament, Jesus speaks against judging others and urges Christians to do everything for the glory of God. Is it possible for a tattoo to bring glory to God in some way? Even though the answer to whether or not tattoos are forbidden is unclear, it is wrong to judge those who have different views.

Tattoos as works of art: man’s skin to be framed

Tattoos are seen by many as works of art that you carry with you on your body, but few people have ever considered hanging them on a wall. Recently deceased Chris Wenzel’s tattoos are about be preserved long after his life is over thanks to the American company Save My Ink Forever. As a tattoo artist, Wenzel wanted his life’s work to live on and Kyle Sherwood, the company’s co-founder, feels the same. This process is likely to be the most extensive preservation process in North America, as Wenzel’s entire body was covered in ink. Keeping tattoos in this way is in the same spirit as not burying an artist’s paintings alongside them in the ground.
