Nothing helps get over a broken heart like a new tattoo… right? Well, this week, football legend Neymar has been trying to get over his heartbreak about ex-girlfriend Bruna Marquezine by getting two new superhero-inspired tattoos across his back. Published in The Sun, the Brazilian football star, 26, revealed his new inkwork, depicting action-shots of both Spiderman and Batman – one on each shoulder blade. His recent split with model Marquezine is said to have been all his decision, and it seems he is certainly marking a new stage in his life with this piece of impressive artistry. The inkwork was carried out by tattooist Thieres Paim, who Neymar has already visited for previous tattoos.

Featured on his popular Instagram page, Paim wrote “As you all know @neymarjr is a fan of the characters #spiderman and #batman…Today I had the pleasure of tattooing this art on his skin!!!”

Speaking of ending relationships, the ongoing disaster that is celebrity relationship tattoos has yet again been flung into the media as Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande recover from their recent public split.

“Um, I’ve been covering a bunch of tattoos, that’s fun,” said the newly single Pete Davidson at an LA gig last weekend, obviously feeling a bit sheepish about the fact that he got at least four tattoos dedicated to Ariana inked onto various parts of his body. Their stormy and short-lived engagement also saw Ariana adding an ink of Pete’s name onto her left ring finger, which, rumour has it, she is currently covering with a good-old plaster!

If you are a hashtag follower, then you might have noticed this week on Instagram that a lot of people are sharing and celebrating photos under the hashtag #mastectomytattoos. Mastectomy tattoos are increasingly popular with people who have had breast cancer surgery and who have gone through the removal of either the whole or part of their breast and often the nipple too. These tattoos are a very intricate way to honour their scars and remember the former glory of their breasts – each one very different and very personal.

According to Instagram, there have been about 600 thousand posts tagged about breast cancer awareness during this month alone, many of which feature mastectomy tattoos.

Meanwhile, in Rabat, Morocco, an ancient tradition dating back to pre-Islamic times is fading away like a distant memory. The distinctive tribal tattoos that were once a ritual of indigenous Amazigh women are disappearing as their bearers age and die. Today, the tattoos are found on older Berber women in rural areas, whereas modern Muslim women are refusing to opt into the inkwork trend.

Traditionally, young girls would get their first tattoos during puberty, and those who tolerated the pain were considered mature enough for the adult responsibilities of life in the rugged mountains.

“When I was 10 years old, we did (the tattoo) with a little needle. We jabbed my chin and we made a drawing,” said Hadda Oaabbjdi, 72, a local resident.
