I really like color. You may be able to give your tattoo a makeover, add colors, and continue it into a sleeve. Check around for a new artist. There maybe one closer than you think. Check portfolios of every artist you can find.

But let me ask you something. Maybe it’s not as bad as you think? It could be my fault for picking out a bad tattoo

He was supposed to copy this tattoo

I told him make the top of the head not peak so much, and remove the bit at the bottom of the tiger under it’s mouth.

Do you think he did a good job of copying this tattoo?

Here’s another pic of mine for reference

and if I do decide to add color and turn it into a traditional style sleeve, should I just stick with this guy since he is good at that?

Okay. This adds a different light on the subject.
Here we subscribe to the position that you tell your tattoo artist what you are ideas are. Then you let the artist use his creativity to design a tattoo for you. It usually requires a deposit for his artwork so he doesn’t waste his time if you don’t show up for the tattoo. If I want to offend a tattoo artist in my area i would download a tattoo from the internet and tell them “I want this”. A tattoo artist IS an artist. Just like a painter, sculptor, or even a musician. Creativity is a wonderful gift. Let your artist utilize his talent.
On the other hand if this guy is just a tattooer, he will just copy what somebody else has created. (Don’t EVER take a picture of an artist’s work then ask somebody else to do it.)
I have a tattoo that my current artist is not happy with. I had the original artist meet with me and my current artist to discuss the changes. Now they are going to both work on a back piece for me. Communicate! It makes a world of difference.

Find a different artist. One who has the talent to draw something spectacular up for you.

Sam-I-am has given you tons of good advice. Wait a few days and reread all that he has written to you here. No-one wants to hear that the tattoo that they are so proud of sucks, but yours can be fixed by the right artist. Made into something absolutely amazing. If you can’t afford to get to the right artist THEN WAIT. Or maybe someone will come to a convention in your area and you can get it done there.

And really???? You don’t like the DeVries tiger???? Really? Pull up a pic of yours side by side with it. Compare the crispness. The detail. The eyes. His wins. You are not worthy. (OK – maybe the last statement was a little bit assholey.) But you need to fix what you have before you add on to it.

Note: If you follow Sam-I-am’s advice and end up with something incredibly amazing you are not required to come back and admit he was right. But we would like to see pics. 😉

Sorry, but yours just isn’t well done. It’s very flat and lifeless.

Even just comparing it with the original, side by side, you see that it’s just like Xeroxing something a few too many times. The details get blurred and stuff goes missing. Just look at them, side by side, and see how much detail has gone missing and how much crispness was never there. Look at the whiskers and teeth, for example.

Your tattooist is simply not up to par, which is evidenced both by his willingness to copy somebody else’s work almost directly off a photo, and by the end results.

A proper tattoo artist can doubtless bring more life to your piece, but you should never go back to the one that gave you this.

alright i thank you guys for the criticism. just want you to know i’m not arguing with you and i’m taking everything you say seriously. i’m going to have to go have a word with my tattoo artist.

if i post a portfolio link of some other artists i find in my area can you guys look through it and tell me if it’d be worth going to that artist?

I need some more people to comment on my tiger.. I’ve posted this other places and everybody thinks it’s really good. Haven’t gotten any responses less than “Wow that’s amazing” in real life.. Maybe you guys are experts in tattoos and can see everything that’s wrong with it instantly.

If you posted anywhere other then on another tattoo forum I would expect the reviews to be positive. Most people think the shit that they saw on Miami ink was fucking awesome. I will admit that even on here you will get a lot of me to comments after the first few. But look you posted two threads with this tattoo in it and I hadn’t seen this one and my first comment was I don’t like it. now that you posted the reference pic I really don’t like it. This all being said it is done and if you don’t cry and run away like most people do and listen to what is being said we can help. let’s get that fucker fixed so you can wear it proudly.

You wanted a tattoo artist to copy another tattoo? WHY ARENT YOU EMBARRASED?

I don’t think the work is good. I’ve seen some very good lions. While I don’t care for black and grey, I do recognize good workmanship.
Please don’t take only my word for this as there will be more members chime in with their opinions.

An artist that freestyles well is an artist and will give you a “tailored” tattoo that you’ll be proud of for years to come. A person working only off drawings or “flash” is a tattooer and will give you a tattoo “off the rack”.
Get a nice tattoo that is unique to you and your body.

You do need to find another artist sam is right, but sam you do realise it’s a tiger not a lion?

i didn’t want to give the artist free reign man. i wanted the tiger to look a specific way. this guy probably would’ve done traditional on me and i wanted portrait style.. and i’ve seen a lot of pictures of portrait style tigers. this was pretty much the only one i liked.

and really i thank you for taking the time to look at these!!

If realism is the style that you like and want to get then you have to find an artist who is as good as this ^^^^^ but does (and excels in) realism. An artist’s portfolio will show you not only how well they can tattoo, but what styles they like to work in and what they want to do more of.

Steven Turner is good at what he does, but what he does is traditional and Japanese.

Keep looking, you will be able to find the right artist.
