I don’t know anything specific about cosmetology tattoos, but assume there isn’t any physical difference between them and regular tattoos.

From my personal perspective, tattoos are very much all about the artwork. I don’t have any interest in crap tattoos, and little interest in even average tattoos.

That also applies somewhat with respect to subject matter, although I still like looking at a really well executed Koi.

That should be easy enough to turn into a full chest piece.

You don’t need a design so much as a theme – roses and vines, or whatever. Then find an artist that does the styling you like (possibly the current one) and have them draw something up based on your ideas.

I don’t know about Japanese shop traditions specifically, but here in the States many of the best artists require a deposit to get a consultation. That’ll include the design the 2 of you come up with. You have to like it and approve it before ink touches skin.

A good artist will design the tattoo around the actual curves and shapes in your particular arm.

You don’t need to be artistic – you just need to appreciate art.

Spend lots of time looking at tattoo portolios (on-line), and get an idea for the type/style of tattoos that you love and can live with forever. The trick is in finding the right artist, and not assuming that any tattooist can do any tattoo.
