<p>&#8211;  Kanji do have their roots in Chinese as Sherav writes. In fact the &#8220;kan&#8221; in &#8220;kanji&#8221; is actually &#8220;han&#8221;  ( translated as &#8220;China&#8221; ) phoneticized for easier pronunciation for Japanse speakers. &#8220;ji&#8221; means &#8220;character&#8221; so you get &#8220;Chinese character&#8221;  or &#8220;character from China&#8221;.
