I want to get a large black (heavily detailed) figure tattooed on my back. When i say large, I mean it will take up a good half of my back. My only concern with getting it done is that I fear the idea of taking my shirt off on a sunny day and having it fade. How long/much sun does it take for a large black (heavily detailed) tattoo to fade? I like being tan, and I hate the idea of having to keep my shirt on when I go to the beach and what not (and thus developing a permanent farmer’s tan), out of fear of ruining my tat. Would I just always have to have sunscreen on me at all times, and ask whoever I’m with to help me out when I ever I go out in the sun and want to take my shirt off, or is it really not that big of a deal? I appreciate any help you guys could give.
Really you should be wearing sunscreen if you want to protect yourself from skin cancer and also to protect your tattoo.
all tattoos fade a bit but sun lotion does help the sun from fading them .
Hi
You should be wearing a min of 30 regardless if you are sun bathing but yes you would need it each and everytime you go out for your tattoo.
Even with suncream sun exposure knackers ink and whereas tattoos can go as long as 15 years without a need for a reshade with serious sun exposure you can prob cut that in half (even with wearing sun cream).
The whole thing with a tan is that your body is actually ‘scarring’ itself on the surface to protect you from further sun damage – take a shot o how your skin looks underneath that thick tan and damn it is not good.
The menolin in your skin only gives you so much protection then the upper skin layers start to bake and crack and then the new layers harden.
That is why many old folks you see who hav spent life in sun look so wrinkled and leathery.
If you are light skinned you are only meant for moderate exposure and even then wear a decent suncream.
You wouldnt spend $2k on a car and leave it in salt air all the time so the paintwork gets destroyed – it is same with your body.

Bah!
Who needs sunlight when industrial pollution gives me all the colour I need – I am a fine rusty colour from all the acid rain!

then let me ask another question. For you guys and girls who have sleeves, do you have any concern about having an exposed tattoo in the sun all the time? Do you guys always put suncream on your forearms whenever you wear a t-shirt and go outside? I apologize for the naivety of the question, but I’m honestly interested as to whether or not that is a concern for you. If I’m worried about the possible sun exposure to my back tat, I couldn’t imagine having a tat permanently exposed. Again, i appreciate all the advice given.
both my arms are tattooed, if im out in the sun i wear sunblock NZ has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, fortunately for me i work indoors most of the time and do try to stay out of the sun, when i was young and dumb i used sunbeds to get a nice tan, now i dont give a shit if im lily white, i’d rather be alive:D
So in short yes wear sunblock, tattoos do fade, but will fade faster if not cared for.
