I got a tattoo and unfortunately the original artist and I didn’t jive well. I needed it to get redone and went to another artist to get it recoloured and cleaned up. When I paid her, I tipped about 20%. I am going back to get it touched up again and I need to pay again since she wasn’t the original artist. (Otherwise it’d be free.) Do I tip her again when I pay, or not? I like the artist, but money unfortunately is a bit tight at the moment. Should I do 15% or suck it up and do the 20%?
There is no rule to tipping an artist.
My view is if you really like the work and feel it deserves a bit extra then tip.
If it is a standard piece of work and you think well nothing special then don’t tip.
Generosity is based on what a person can afford to give willingly – not how much they give because they are forced to.
I am sure they will appreciate whatever you give them.

Your advice was more than helpful.
The touch up was quicker the expected. The original quote for more time, so she charged me less. As I was expecting to pay more, it worked out very well – I tipped nicely and paid for the services and even together it was less expensive than what I was expecting. 🙂
