Hello there! My names Ashwin and I’m from Bombay, India. I got inked by a friend a couple of months ago. The design I got on my right arm was conceptualized by me and this was my first tattoo. My friend did a decent job at making the tattoo. It looked good for a week but then gradually started fading off and started to look dull. I did everything he told me to protect the tattoo like… i kept it covered in dry foil for a week and kept changing the foil at least thrice a day and would apply coconut oil twice a day just before washing it off with dettol soap in order to get the excessive ink off. Even applied moisturizer twice a day (Nivea cream) to keep the area moist. But then eventually it started to fade off and now looks like a disaster. I havent gone for the touch up as yet. But I wanna make sure that i maintain it properly after i get it retouched. I also have dreadlocks and wash my hair using baking soda and apple cider vinegar. Do u think the baking soda played a role in the fading away of the ink?
Need some advice regarding after care of the tattoo. Kindly help.

I’m posting 3 pics of my tattoo… one was when the tattoo was just made.. the second was a couple of days later and the third is the most recent one in which it looks damn bad.

    Welcome!

It sounds like you are putting way too much crap in it. When I “dry wrap” using plastic wrap, I wash it several times a day using antibacterial liquid soap, then re wrap it with NO ointment. After the 2-3 days I stop the wrapping, and use a NON PETROLEUM based ointment only once or twice a day. I then moisturize it daily.

thanks for the reply! so does vasaline count as a NON PETROLEUM based ointment??? and moisturizing using a cream like Nivea??
also had a question… will i have to stop my gymming/cardio program for a week after getting it retouched?

Vasaline’s full name is Vasaline petroleum Jelly.

Aveeno, Lubridern, and Cetaphil are lotions available in the US. The trick is to use VERY LITTLE of any of them.

    Where are you located?

You will want to stay far away from a gym, a fresh tattoo is a WOUND and gyms are full of nasty bacteria.

I don’t think you broke your tattoo Ashwin from Bombay, India. I think it was made with poor technique.
I honestly thought that the first picture was of the faded tattoo not the fresh tattoo before I scrolled down.
Go get it lasered and seek out a professional tattoo artist with a solid reputation.
