    Hey all,

I’ve had this idea for quite some time now, and decided that I would like to get a tat on my back left shoulder.

The subject matter will be human anatomy. I’m going to med school in a bit, and want to dedicate a piece of my body to medicine. Here’s a drawing from Netter’s anatomy, a medical reference book that’s full of drawings like this one:

    http://blog.timesunion.com/mdtobe/files/2010/09/brach_plxs_netter1.jpg

That’s not exactly what I would like, but more of a general idea. Ideally I want the tattoo to look like a dissection: the skin peels back to reveal muscle and tendon, which is cut aside to reveal bone, and finally the lung and heart.

    Some questions I have are:

    1. What shops should I go to? I’ve been googling places but haven’t found any artists that do exactly what I’m looking for. I’m in NYC

    2. Should I bring the anatomy book with me on an appt to show them exactly what I want or will that be rude to tell them to draw something ‘exactly’ as shown in a pic?

    3. How long should I expect this to take?

    4. Will this look better in black/white or color?

    5. How much should I expect to spend? I’m not looking to cut corners on price, since this will be on my body for the rest of my life. No point in having it look like someone stabbed me with a crayon. A rough estimate would be sweet

    6. Is this nuts?

    Thanks so much

go in to a respectable studio with a good artist who could pull it off, mainly someone who is amazing at linework and ask them about it. Prices vary all depends how good you want it to look, who gives a fuck if it’s nuts it’s something that means something to you so it shouldn’t matter what anybody thinks.

As Wardy said, just get an awesome artist and they will work with on it. I like the idea 🙂

Try here for some references on artists that I made.

    2. Should I bring the anatomy book with me on an appt. (Yes)

    3. How long should I expect this to take? (Some artists are fast, some are slow. Size will be a factor too)

    4. Will this look better in black/white or color? (Definatly color!)

    5. How much should I expect to spend? (one place I went to charged $10.00 per square inch. Figure $100.00 per hour and UP)

    6. My nuts? (Scrotum tattoos don’t usually hold up well, especially with frequent female saliva applications))

    Thanks so much

    Good luck, keep us posted.

    Welcome to the forum!

Talk with the artist. If you go somewhere where the artist doesn’t have time for you don’t have money for them. Take your business elsewhere. Take several books if necessary to give the artist the best view of what you want that way when they draw it up it will be what you want. Good luck and post pics we love pics

Definitely check out Peter’s “Forbes List” to get some names, then start by looking at their work online. Then talk to a couple that you like. The artists will be able to give you an idea of time and cost once because it depends on a lot of factors (size, their rates, etc.). The average shop rate around here is probably $150/hr, but I happily pay my artist her rate of $200/hr because she is one of the best in my city.

I know that you want it NOW NOW NOW but please don’t be in a hurry – a great tattoo artist is worth the wait. Trust me on this. The wait is hard but the result is so worth it.

And for your tattoo – color, definitely color!!
