I’ve been searching for a while as to where to start with my first tattoo. I want something I can build off of and add to over the years. I tend to like tribal designs more so than pictures or words. I was watching a movie where one of the characters had war paint on their torso and arms. I like the overall look of it and have found a picture online really close to what I’m looking for. This is the picture I’m going to work off of http://www.pixolator.com/zbc/attachment.php?attachmentid=75196. I like the bold, aggressive look depicted in the picture and want something real similar to it. The main thing I’m going to steer away from is the large blotching on the stomach in the picture. Plan to do something a little more streamlined. The main thing I’m struggling with is deciding how far to carry it onto my back (how much wrap around I want) and how to terminate it. Looking for some suggestions on any part of it, I’m not locked into anything yet. I also plan to have it carry over a bit to my upper arms, just has to be able to be covered by a short sleeve shirt. Currently I don’t exactly have money falling out my asshole so I’m saving a bit here and there. I’d like to start with the strip going over the shoulder and onto the chest. I’m just trying to get an idea of how much each strip would cost. I realize it’s had to say from a picture, just trying to get a ballpark idea.

I personally am not a fan or tribal work, so I may not be much help lol.
What’s the story behind wanting tribal? Will you be just as “into it” 30 years from now???

My best advice is to go to your local tattoo shops, and have a look around. Ask to see portfolios of each artist and ask them if they have expierence doing tribal work. Then, once you find the right one you’ll feel comfortable with; ask them to draw something up for you. I would reccomend having an artist just draw it custom to your body that way it’s semi-original. And ask the artist if he has an hourly rate for larger pieces.

    Hi

The key to good tribal is that it has to fit the contours of your body so an artist will ideally need to measure you up so that the stripes are in proportion.

A piece like that (which is body paint on the picture so may not look as glossy when done as a tattoo btw) will set you back a couple of grand at least.

The thing about your back is that it is the biggest canvas you have and you want to add to it later on. If you were to go across the back i would suggest part way in and allow a good space for any further tattoos.

If you are new to tattooing click on my sig there is a free ebook I wrote to help ppl new to the community.

Maybe tribal isn’t the best way to describe what I’m looking for. I’m going for that shock and intimidating look that war paint offers. I was toying with the idea of trying to tie it into and Eagle Globe and Anchor at the top of my shoulders but I’m not sure how to do that.
