Hi everyone. A little over a year ago I decided to get my second tattoo and didn’t mess about. I got a fairly large back piece of a phoenix done. But I feel that the guy who did it was more of a tattooist (no offence) than an artist. More of a tracer really. But whats done is done. What I’m after is a bit of help and some suggestions as to how I can get it improved. I knew I wasn’t happy with it once it was finished ad I would need more work. So please give me any suggestions you might have. I have posted a picture of it so feel free to comment but please keep it constructive.

First of all that was a brave first tattoo – you are right you did not mess about.
Actually it is not that bad but needs some more loving care to make it the best tattoo it can be.
Constructive Criticism
First of all it could do with a re-outline with more emphasis on feathers and head.
The feathers could do with more shaping which can be achived by greater shading either in colour or drop shading from the outline of them inwards.
Adding smoke and a wreathe of flames around the body of the phoenix this will make the phoenix stand out a lot more.
I would also add a firey forked tongue to the beak, the tongue in there does not do it justice, and more shape around the eyes.
All of this is easily fixable and will make a great tattoo for you.

Thanks for the replies. Its not actually my first tattoo. My first was a reasonable sized tribal on the top of my left arm reaching onto my shoulder. I waited till I was 26 for that one and waited nearly another 8 years for the second. I wanted to be absolutely sure of what I wanted. Its just unfortunate that I got to the point that I had made my mind up and got to eager. Oh well. I’ll keep this updated as to what happens next with the phoenix. (Once I have the spare cash to get it sorted and find someone to do it.)
