    Hey all,

I got my first tattoo done earlier in the week by one of my best friends… Sadly im not happy with it at all. The white detail is not finished so i understand that but i think the face is really ugly.

I have’nt got the heart to say anything to him so im thinking is it best to go somewhere elese when it heals?

Please say theres something that can be done with it?

    Thanks kindly

    Hi Sam

First of all when you say that your friend did it – are they a pro artist? If they are they need to be able to take constructive criticism or they will find no return customers – you cannot grow without being told when something is wrong.

The face can be reworked but will need a very experienced artist to redo it so it is more life-like – the lips especially will need boldening out and perhaps some colour to cover over the orig mouth.

    If you want some constructive criticism on how to improve the tattoo I will add my 2 pennies worth;

First of all it is not a bad tattoo but could be touched up to bring out the best it can be.

Outline – This needs redoing – there are whole patches where it has either not been done or has fallen out especially on the right wing and left side of the jaw.

Eyes – Pupils need better outline and tear ducts adding. More colour required in the iris. Add some eyelashes and lids as well – not too much work needed but will be a lot better if added.

Nose – Dude what happened here? Those nostrils have to be redone she looks like her face was stamped on. This can be redone but will need some pro work to get the nose in a better shape – perhaps add a nose ring to disguise the wandering nostril on the left.

A thicker outline will make the tattoo stand out and create greater dimensions to the figure.

Hair – Not to be awful but she looks like she has a medusa going on those locks resemble snakes more than hair. My advice is get a deeper colouring or shading so that she has more thickness and wave to the hair – will make her look more feminine. It is very simple thing to fix.

Wings – these could do with more outline definition as well as more fine detailing on the feathers – not bad but could be way more detailed and will make a huge difference to the end result if you spend the extra time on getting more depth on the feathers.

Collar Bones – She don’t have any and there is a hint that hers have collapsed with the line. If you bold and shade the area it will make her more realistic.

Breasts – there is no hint of aureoles – are her nipples pointing downwards? If you get a touch of a semi circle rising above the cloth or get the top raised slightly more in a seamed finish they will look more like tits and less like balloons. Again it is a small detail but one which will create a more sensual allure to the finished tattoo.

Hands – Very difficult to draw but would benefit from having the fingernails coloured and perhaps adding a hint of knuckles to make them more lifelike. Again small details but will make the tattoo rock.

I am suggesting these things so that you can get the best from your tattoo and I do not mean to cause offense or bag on you.

It is not a bad tattoo but I can see the potential of having it being reworked by an experienced pro artist.

    Take Care
    Matthew

I think you should be honest with your friend because they are going to see you got it reworked at some point.

Well Sam, you came here for critique and started off by saying you don’t like it, so I will hope my words do not hurt too badly.

First, it is very poorly drawn from the get-go. I would look at this tattoo and know that this is one artist I would not want putting ink on my skin. Your friend or not, he’s a very poor artist.

Matthew has gone through the details, but IMO he was being kind on several aspects. Her face looks like it belongs to the elephant man, and her hands look like rubber pencils or something equally odd. From the posture and location of the loin cloth, I’d think that you should already be seeing some crotch area, but that somehow just magically disappears. The kindest thing to be said for the tattoo is that her breasts are not equal in size and shape, which gives a hint of realism.

My real question to you, however, is perhaps the worst:

Did you not see how horrible the drawing was, before it was turned into stencil and then ink?

    Hi all,

Thanks very much for the replys, i’ll defo be showing your ideas Sherav to whom ever i get to finish it off. Hopefully it will turn into something i am happy with.

The thing is his work is normally fantastic he’s been tattooing for over 10 years. In all honesty i dont think he does much of this kind of thing.

I’ll be sure to keep you all posted.

    Thanks again
    Sam

    hi sam,
most of what i was going to say has already been brought to attention… her nose and her left eye are the first obvious poits to notice in my eyes, her body is anatomically incorrect, her fingers look like a childrens colouring book picture of a barbie doll and the outline work is inconsistant…. this is not a hard piece to rework but i would definately go to a studio the next time.. i would leave it for a couple of months before searching for another artist as i am sure that a lot of that shading is going to drop out anyway.

you need to tell your friend how you really feel
