What type of car speakers would you recommend to a guy who mainly listens to rock and heavy metal? (im not interested in the thumping)

try infinity components they give clean and clear sound you hear everything put those in front and in the back some 6×9 3way speakers will be fine

The first response has the right idea. Focal make some awesome components. For the type of music you like the Focal K2P would rock your world. They would need a little bit more power than the 70watts mentioned by the guy above.
Also if you want even louder, but not quite as smooth, look into the MB Quart Q Series. The MB Quart QSD components get ridiculously almost unnecessarily loud….. You can get them for about $289 at Onlinecarstereo.com and their original retail was $999
