It seems like these days the mainstream music scene does
not even want to accept or atleast respect Heavy Metal as an
important form of music. The only bands people care about
these days are Metallica,Korn,Slipknot and other crap
nu-metal bands. And these same people think that the bands
i mentioned above are are the epitome of Metal music.
They don’t have the balls to go listen to heavier bands like
    Slayer,Cannibal Corpse,Nevermore,Strapping Young Lad
and Pantera (before they broke up and before Dime got killed)
Korn and Slipknot used to be very good bands but now i feel
like they have sold out horribly. For the longest time i loved
Metallica and followed them through every album but now i
feel like they too have sold out and become VERY
overexposed.Metal was extremely popular and heavy in the
1980’s but in the 1990’s the popularity started to fade.
Think about it when was the last time any Metal band besides
Metallica won any major american music award or grammy?

You could pretty much extend that to every genre of music. Simple fact, the average person isn’t consumed with the desire to know underground bands, they’re satisfied with what the mainstream has to offer.

Yes but it’s the same thing for punk. (old-school) Despite having shaped music for the future, it will never be taken seriously because the audience will never be taken seriously.
Rarely do you see a man in a suit proclaim his love for metal.
