Hey guys,
This is my first post and I am hoping some of you guys could help me out. I know most forums frown upon people signing up not introducing themselves properly and then firing away with questions. So here’s a little about me.
I’m an Aussie, came here in 1986 from Germany, born in Poland. Mum Dad and Sis is all the family I know apart from an Aunt. My Dad’s an awesome bloke, easy going and always happy, my mums a loving nut who was so scared of messing her kids up, that well, she messed them up. I was spoilt in many ways and this made me a despicable person. The self hatred that followed was quite powerful and led to many stupid decisions which I will pay for till my last breath. Family battles destroyed both me and her and its only been recently that I have been in contact with them after several years. I’m not here for pity, just thought I’d open up a bit.
I’m looking for an artist and some design ideas for a tattoo that could help mask a moronic scar across the back of my skull. I really don’t want to get into the why’s and how’s of the scar, lets just say it was my own doing and quite regrettable. This tattoo will signify a passing of the old, a certain closure, a laying to rest if you will.
I cover my head, well constantly, whether it be with hats or beanies or concealing makeup, so a tattoo covering my skull would not change my current lifestyle. On the contrary, as I am rather ashamed of the scar (not a cool story), masking it with a tattoo, that I hope to be proud of, may allow me to engage in activities once enjoyed but long ceased.
The scar is several years old and has had co2 laser treatments toning it down quite a bit. Its not heavily raised or recessed and I believe it can be inked. I understand that ink in scars may fade faster and require re-working. I was thinking of cosmetic tattooing to match the colour of my skull but that will change with varied tans and could simply highlight the scar.
All tips and tricks regarding tattooing a dome shaped object would be appreciated. As well as all tips regarding colours and designs that best mask scars.
I have no definitive design ideas but I love the idea of a HR Giger type of biomechanical design or perhaps a 3d design along the same vane. All suggestions are appreciated.
Info on Artists and studios in Sydney Australia that I could go speak to personally would also be appreciated. I don’t plan on rushing into anything, I’ve thought about this for years and am now looking to take the next step.
Thanks so much in advance and I hope to get some feedback from you guys.
Cheers
You need to go to an artist and chat around and see who’s confident about the challenge, who has experience. (See my album. I know about bad scars.)
If you’ve considered all options and you want a tattoo on your head, you sound like a grown person who knows how to handle this.
Thanks for the reply. I’ll check out your album. Do you get many Aussies on her that may be able to direct me to some artists? Finding an artist I am confident in and that is willing to tackle the job will probably be the toughest thing.
Check out my signature link mate for artists. They are the people you need to speak to really about options 🙂
We have Amok and Aussie Al. I don’t know the latter as well, but Amok is worth sending a PM to and asking some questions/recommendations.
Peter’s list is also awesome and helped me in making a decision about a tattoo.
Thanks Peter. Only one in Sydney tho, gotta start somewhere tho. Few up in Brisbane I’ll check out too. Thanks heaps

No worries, I was thinking there is loads in Brisbane and Melbourne and because I live in London I thought these might be close lol I forget how big Australia is. How many miles to both those from where you are?
Brizzy’s bit under 1000k’s and Melbourne a bit over, I think. Flights are fairly cheap but I’m not exactly cashed up atm. Really just need to speak with artists, face to face, to see what the limitations and options are. This is gonna be an expensive exercise.
I’m not normally a huge Bio-Mech fan, but that style would probably work out really well for working around and covering a scar. As long as you find someone REALLY good at it. Good for you for doing your research first!!
A suggestion: call the shops on Peter’s list and tell them where you are and what you are looking to do. They can probably steer you to someone really good in your neck of the woods. (Then post links to their work and some of the experts here will weigh in on how good they are.)
Good luck! And welcome to the forum.
It may be a stupid question, but with regards to the visibility of this tattoo I have to ask: Will this tattoo be covered with a thick brush of hair most of the time, or do you shave your head?
When I get home I’ll look through my computer and find some Sydney artists who can pull of that style. For now here’s some good shops, I recommend you browse their websites.
Kaleidoscope
Hunter and Fox
Shanghai Charlie’s
Inner Vision
I’ll get back to you with more tonight.
Ok here’s some artists who you could talk to in Sydney. I don’t know of anyone who specialises in Biomech, but here’s some with good realism work.
Jin from Kaleidoscope (she’s got some decent looking biomech in her portfolio) Jin O |
Maija from Kaleidoscope tattoo Maija |
Ping Pong – think he’s now at Inner Vision, does great realism. Inner Vision Custom Tattoo Sydney Australia
As no hair as it gets. Laser hair removal kinda no hair. Only grey and white hairs grow so I shave them. The scar is completely exposed.
Thanks Heaps Amok. That’ll keep me busy for a while.
