Ok, so i am getting my first tattoo, but the artist and shop i have selected use petroleum jelly to lube the skin during the process. I understand that this is common practice, but I am highly allergic to petroleum….

Does anyone out there know of an alternative that i could recommend to my artist? I’m sure I’m not the first person with a petroleum allergy.

Thanks to all who respond.

Obviously if you are allergic to pertroluem…. you shouldn’t use it

And, introduce yourself to us before you start shooting questions…. we use this as a social forum too…… not just an information search index

Just tell your tattooist. They should be able to offer you an alternative. A&D is petroleum free if I am not mistaken. I have big tubs of it, just live the petroleum jelly. I would personally try coco butter, as I am certain that would work. Unless you are allergic to it! 😮
You should always inform your tattooist of any allergies, even if it seems un related to tattooing. I had a client that was allergic to Titanium. They only told me when I happened to mention that the white I was going to use in their tattoo contained titanium dioxide. If that had not come out, it would have been a nasty reaction that would have ruined the tattoo at the least!

Hi

There are many water and vegetable based oils that can be used eg palm oil which do not contain petroleum so you should be fine.

Good luck with the tattoo and post up when you are done.

Take Care
