Each and every time your anti-virus connects to the internet, be it for update purposes or checking the database containing information on each type of virus, it asks it’s respective connected servers for updates on new threats. These servers analyze hundreds of thousands of pages of the internet every day and night searching for those malicious codes out there hell bent on destroying computers. When the server finds these codes it logs an entry stating the nature, name of, and rough estimate of capabilities that each virus contains. So your software reads this data and makes the necessary updates and adjustments to protect your system. Or something like that lol.

virus’s are detected by the coding used to create them, they use strings of coding which are all the same basicaly, most anti virus’s have this ability to detect them, when its been detected it gets relayed back to the softwares creaters and they make a update to include the string for the future, this makes sure nobody else gets it
