I started reading the book once, probably 17 years ago but never finished it (which I intend to do shortly by the way). I just recently saw “La Riviere du Hibou” (the early 60’s version of the story) that was also chosen to be aired at Twilight Zone’s last episode, and I was moved by it, to the point where it’s been sticking in my mind the last couple of days.

He was in denial his life was about to end and went into his escape fantasy feeling the gratefulness and joy at realizing he was still alive (in the fantasy)! Running freely through the forests to find his beautiful wife, whom he runs to hug and tell her he was spared probably, and to live the rest of his life with her. Then the rope breaks in reality! It may sound corny but when I saw that, I let out a “No!” in my head! LOL I couldn’t believe it. The part where he was happy to be alive was what really hit me. Am I just an overly sentimental sap or can others relate?!
