I had my first tattoo done 3 weeks ago on my inner forearm. The tattoo healed with a lot of scabbing and I let it all fall off naturally.

There’s a few spots where the scabs came off prematurely and seem to have removed the ink so I guess I’ll be doing a few touch ups.

My real concern is how the skin looks after three weeks…shiny and wrinkly.

Any feedback? should I be worried or am I just being overly concerned being that this is my first and I don’t know any better!?

Here’s a pic of the full thing

    It is normal!
    What does it say?
    Are you sure?

    Normal…that’s what I thought but wasn’t sure!

It says “One life” in Sanskrit.

    I’m I sure of what?

Well… Sort of normal. That didn’t heal very well. I can already see places it’s blown out, and judging by your amount of scar tissue, there is a chance it’s been tattooed too deeply. But impossible to know until it heals properly. All the loss of color is bad too.
Like, it’s not an emergency and you just need to let it heal completely, but I’d say see another artist for the touch up it’s gonna need.

Is there a chance the skin never fully heals and remains looking shiny and wrinkly for ever?

When you say loss of color are you referring to the spots that are missing ink or overall?

My main concern at this point is how my skin looks over the entirety of the tattoo…it looks like a big inked scar and I’m worried the skin like some scars will remain scar tissue forever!

It requires pretty deep scars before that happens. I have some that go into the bone of my leg, and they are slightly shiny and wrinkly. So no. It should heal up fine, but it may take a while.
    Yes, the spots.

It IS a scar. But scars heal. Know when you scrape your knees? Only the really really deep ones leave scars forever. The ones who barely remove skin? No, they heal.
Some tattoos take MONTHS to heal properly, that’s just how it is. All you can do is wait, but it will heal.

Thank you so much for your feedback…my anxiety has dropped!

The blown parts are what they are…and the spots that need touch ups at least that can be addressed…

It was a pretty rough heal but being my first I was worried that something went really wrong!

    Thanks again

No problem, it’s always freaky when you get your first tattoo and something differs from what you’ve expected. Post pics when it’s healed!

Perfectly normal. Your tattoo is still very fresh and won’t be healed for a little while yet.

Just to compare; I got two tattoos last week, one is now 10 days old, the other is 8 days old. The first one got a small infection, and even though the infection itself has healed, there is still a scab in that spot. No big deal at all, it’s just taking the skin some extra time to heal. This is also a full color tattoo where certain areas have been worked on a LOT, these take time to heal. The linework however healed 5 days ago.
The 8-day old one is more or less healed, but there is still some light flaking in some places, some shiny spots and one of the parts with the most black, that was worked on the most, is still a bit dry with light flaking in some areas. This tattoo had a negative reaction to an ointment which means the healing takes a bit longer. This is a b&g tattoo, so it heals faster than the full color one. Both of these reactions are perfectly normal and I know both of my tattoos will heal perfectly in a week or so.

Now, scar tissue doesn’t happen that quickly. It takes quite a while actually. Skin typically takes 28 days to regenerate, but tattoos are placed deeper into the skin so the full healing process takes quite a while longer. If the skin has suffered a lot of trauma (being over-worked, going over lines several times, slow artist, going to deep etc), it will take a while to heal. That “shiny” stuff is called Silver skin, and is what happens usually after scabbing. It’s a thin layer of skin that’s in place so that the skin below can heal properly without being exposed. It will disappear once skin is healed. Perfectly normal to have several phases of healing within the same tattoo as well.
