Where are you located? It looks like a really straight forward easy cover-up. I do them all the time. There are quite a few bad tattoo artists in my area that keep me quite busy with cover-ups.

Looks nice, in my opinion a more Alphonse Mucha styled lady would be more appropriate with how feminine the flower is. Traditional can be very strong next to other styles. I definitely think Art Nouveau would suit it well.

Here’s the tiger all healed up. I added a bit of shading to the upper canine, but other than that, the whole tiger is healed. Adding more stuff along the way.

There’s actually not a lot of white over the old tattoo. Mostly chalky blues like dusty blue and periwinkle. I have had incredible success with these colors in regards to cover-ups. I’ll try to get a healed photo for you. My client is coming back this week for more.

She is being paid with knowledge. My apprenticeship was shorter, but I too worked for free. Her circumstance may not be ideal, but she had a choice in accepting an apprenticeship at that shop with that artist.

It’s impossible to have an accurate swatch. Every color will be slightly different on each individual skin tone. Your best bet is to mix the color. Basic color theory.

Opaque colors will work well if you choose to add color. I have had luck covering solid black stuff with dusty blue, clay gray, jade green, smoke, and dark ochre. I have some cover-ups posted on my Instagram (@davidjtattoos) with before and after pictures. Any reputable artist will know about and have the colors I’m talking about.

I guess the best thing you can do is get a great portfolio together and start hitting up shops. You can meet artists at tattoo conventions too. If you want to learn from the absolute best, you may have to relocate. Some of the best artists are nomads. Where are you located?

I wear XXL gloves instead of XL because when they’re any tighter, I get hand fatigue. XL gloves make my fingers want to stay straight. The larger gloves allow my hands to move more freely. 🙂

Thanks, couldn’t agree more. I have such a hard time putting black in. By that, I mean before I add color, my shading looks sooo dark. When I’m done with my color, sometimes the images look flat. Maybe I’ll have to break up sittings and have them come back after the shading is healed.

The second one is repairable. You just need to find a good artist that is good at realism and familiar with the movie Dead Alive. Although it might never be perfect, I could make it way better than it is in just one sitting.

It’s not just $850. It’s the fact that she was kind enough to get me a tool that will help me every day in my job. I tattoo lots of other people for money every day. That’s the nice thing about money; you can always make more. I can afford to give away a few tattoos for her.

You sir, are correct. Any average artist can knock this out of the park. Just make sure the final drawing is exactly what you want. Make sure you look for smooth, even lines in their portfolio.

I’m a tattoo artist. I do love tips, but they aren’t mandatory. I would be more than happy with 20%. It doesn’t matter if it is at the end of each session or at the finish of the tattoo. I generally tip around 25% to other artists.

Here is an actual sheet of flash I just finished. I usually just do one image on a page. Laying out and painting the pattern in the background was a huge pain, but i think it was worth it. That’s what you get when customers insist. I’m in a position where I can’t turn too many people away. I’ve got too many open spots in my schedule and I have to pay my bills. I just try to execute their tattoos to the best of my ability.

Women’s chests are incredibly hard to tattoo. One of my least favorite places to tattoo. Right up there with the spot just under the rib cage and the stomach. It takes a lot of effort getting lines in. Chest pieces look amazing though.
