I heard that scabbing it a sign of a poorly done tattoo (or improperly taken care of). Make sure you are letting the scabs fall off naturally and not picking at them. My tattoo (week old) is starting to scab up in the very top right of it on my hip bone, and I have been using aquaphor on it twice everyday and doing exactly what I have been told.
With this being said, it seems natural that it will scab up. Just make sure you take good care of tattoo and it should turn out just fine

You should be using A&D ointment or Tattoo Fix at least twice a day. All tattoos will scab at some point, that's not the problem. The big thing to remember is that you shouldn't pick or mess with the scab at all. Color will fade and even the best artists will offer to retouch. You mentioned red? Red in my experience is the hardest color to hold first time around. We've always had to have the red retouched at the very least.
Don not use lotion or Vaseline (they can drain the color and don't allow the art to breathe). You should have received a care sheet from the artist, read it. If you didn't, call and inquire if they have one. If they don't, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!! All legitimate parlors will offer care instructions. Good luck!

Did your artist not give you care instructions? You should be putting A&D ointment on it to CONSTANTLY keep it moist until it heals... not twice a day
If the scabs are so thick that your color is coming off, then you aren't taking care of your tattoo. If you can't take the time to care for it, then save your money. Even touched up they aren't ever going to look the same.

well you are supposed to keep lotion on it so that it doesn't do that. and when i scabs don't try to scratch it off make sure not to try to do any-thin with it other then put lotion on it. and you have to get tattoos touched up no matter what you do cuz they always fade

uh-oh! i read a magazine article once where this girl got a big infection from getting a tattoo and needed like major surgery to remove all the infected skin. i hope you don't need that surgery! i would go see a Dr. right away.
