I got my tattoo 5 days ago and it's scabbing up quite a bit and peeling off naturally. other parts are still scabbed pretty heavily.. i just don't want to risk infection. what are signs to look for in infected tattoos?

The only difference between a person with tattoos, and a person without is this. The person with tattoos does not care if you do not have any.

its quite normal for some areas to scab a little more than others . mine is like that on areas i have a couple of colours mixed together
unless its very painful or has gunk coming out from under the scab i would not worry too much
