A few months ago, I was offered an apprenticeship at a somewhat new local tattoo shop. It’s atmosphere was that of, ‘just starting out/bare bones’. The front desk was four pieces of wood pretty much glued together, the walls were practically peeling along with the floors, and there wasn’t much of a ‘professional’ feel to it.
The owner, a tall fat guy that’d I’d catch giving me weird looks, would sit and smoke at his ‘booth’ and talk openly about porn and pussy and things like that. His wife, another tattoo artist, would talk about installing a stripper pole in the ‘waiting area’… And i don’t know, but it was just so trashy there.
To make things worse, the other tattoo artist had just been released from prison for armed robbery and theft, apparently. (Yes, he was bragging…)
I think he was the worst of all of them. When I was in the back room organizing their things or working on stencils, he’d get really close and stroke my hair and call me names like ‘sweetie’ or ‘babe’.
I quit going there because I couldn’t handle the massive amounts of cigarette smoke coming in from the back door or having to look at beers hidden under their desks.

I really don’t want to think that most tattoo shops are like this. I don’t want to work in trashy environments, I have too much respect for myself to put myself in a place like that. But I’m just hoping that THAT isn’t an ideal shop…

Can someone please enlighten me? I don’t want to have to deal with that many pigs in one place.

???
have you any tattoes? where were they done?
you have chosen tattooing as a career and you can’t answer your own question!!
and the answer is no, 99.9% of professionals are exactly that, professional. A lot of artist’s publish photo’s of their studio’s on their websites.
If i wanted a stripper pole, fags and booze i’d go to the pub

No, I’ve no tattoos yet. But trust me, I’ve got plenty that I want, but I’m low on money and a year too young to be tattooed. I’m only 17. They said if I volunteered enough there, they’d give me the apprenticeship once I was ready. So I basically had it, cuz I was willing to volunteer.

So, you’re underage and the owner is hitting on you? If it were me, and I were feeling vindictive, I’d give a call over to the funny men in blue.

It sounds like you would be “volunteering” for a lot more than tattoo work.

Check out a reputable, professional shop. Check how long they’ve been in business too.

Let us know how you make out.

Perhaps a slightly better double entendre than expected, considering the context of the thread 😉

I would have but, I don’t feel like starting problems with them. They seemed… well weird. Especially the ‘recently-out-of-prison’ guy. If he’s had problems before, I wouldn’t want him showing up at my place. O.o

Ok. I have to ask. Is this a troll?

Was this a real shop? Were they licensed?
Inspectors routinely visit shops to make sure theyre up to code on sanitation.

I have walked out of shops because the floors werent swept and the trash was full.
If theyre too lazy to push a broom and take the trash out, then what else are they lazy about.

Im not sure this isnt a troll but…
If you walk into a shop that isnt orderly and clean, you should walk out.
And if you did leave the place, you did the right thing.

You have answered your own question, should of been obvious when they employed you as a tattoo apprentice at 17.

No. I’m not a troll. It was just completely not what I ever expected a shop to be like, considering it’s maybe the second shop I’ve ever been in. (Not that I avoid shops, it’s just they’re rare where I’m from…)

That’s not what shops are usually like, they just sound like a bunch of inbred’s who thought they should open a shop, report them to trade and standard’s.. They keep beer under there stations? …. what the actual fuck.

Neat that you shared your experience. But that question….

“I just ate a whole bucket of real, stinking shit, and I don’t even like shit. Was that wrong?”
